There is some sparse data and journals and stuff that you can piece together what type of winter it was, but certainly not enough to get accurate or even semi-accurate precip/snow/temp data.

I have studied it when I have spare time (often in the weather "off season" of summer lol) and have a document that I jot notes down, plus theres David Ludlum books that details things. But im nowhere NEAR done studying them. Honestly, it appears that the overall jist of winter over here (Detroit) was very similar to it is now, although a likely colder climate overall. Some winters were harsh and others were not. The 1830s to mid 1850s seemed to be dominated by mild, dry, "open" winters, though with exceptions of course (a HUGE exception being 1842-43). Then the mid 1850s to 1860s seemed to have a lot of harsh winters, tho again, with some exceptions.

Notes of "easy" winters:

1846-47 (wheat crops destroyed due to open winter)
1847-48 (small quantity of snow fell, open winter; wheat damaged)
1849-50 (quite mild and snowless; only 1 day of sleighing as of Jan 28)
1852-53 (open winter, very dry)
1858-59 (crops likely damaged due to open winter)
1859-60 (wheat damaged somewhat due to open winter)
1860-61 (no ice on any river on any account, open winter)

Notes of "severe" winters

1842-43 (most severe winter ever known; snowcover nov 17-apr 8)
1854-55 (open winter until deep snow late Jan, then it got the deepest since 1842-43)
1856-57 (houses suffered the rigors of the severe winter)

Isn't that 1842-43 winter nuts? Just the snowcover statement alone makes 13-14 look "ok" lol. I know nothing of the depths in 1842-43. Are there any measurement data that you're aware of? (oh, and I figured you'd be going north this winter - hope your trip is great)

Looking basically snowless going forward into early March from this area northwestward.  Mason City is doing even worse than MLI (which has 6.7" currently) with only 3.4" for the season.  That's about 26" below normal.  I couldn't find what the all-time least snowy season was for Mason City on the Des Moines WFO site, so not sure what they'll need to break that record.

It's all going to come down to whether or not we can sneak through March/early April without too many nickel and dimers.  Now that we've made it this far I want to break that futility record, but if a major snowstorm were to end that possibility I'd be okay with that I guess.

Between the ~4" of snow on the ground and the air temps/WCs, it is truly a deep winter day out there right now. After the most recent storm system here, Wisconsin actually has a pretty good snowpack. Most of the state is 4+ with a large percentage 8+. Considering how bad this winter has been for that, that's a pretty big rally.

Had another 0.4" overnight. More lake squalls and blowing and drifting snow.

Going to the upper peninsula for a few days of deep winter fun. This would be a fantastic beavis trip because from the entire drive from metro Detroit to the shores of Lake Superior is a beautiful thick blanket of white.

Pics at home before leaving.

Media reports are a Delta flight that departed MSP ended up being flipped upside down while landing at YYZ (one of the wings are also missing).

Early speculation is that it was weather-related between high winds and snowy/icy runways, but it just happened within the hour and will be investigated.

Fortunately, there have been no deaths, but 8 people have been confirmed as injured...

I drove to YYZ to check it out. There is a lot of blowing snow today thanks to the strong winds and the runway did look snow covered.

The entire plane was flipped over and the fire crews were dowsing the plane when I was there. Looks like it flipped over almost right after it landed as it was right near where it would've touched down.

I couldn't get a picture cause the snowbanks were too high to walk through and the blowing snow made it difficult. YYZ just opened up one of the other runways.

Glad to know everyone is safe!

unlikely wx related if the wing is missing. passenger probably bumped the wings fall off toggle switch.

I'm ambivalent at best about snow (really only here for the big dogs with lots of model hype that verifies; and when has that actually happened? lol), hate driving in it (Go figure, I'm fine with driving a mile from an EF4 tornado, but I don't f*** with winter precip if I can help it) and I intensely dislike the deep cold. However, we desperately needed some sort of snowpack going into spring to avoid a flash drought.

High clouds never cleared the area and cut into max cooling potential a bit.  Still managed to get down to -12 so far.

Looking like a nice streak of 50s starting Monday next week.  May even make a run at 60 Wednesday.  Should take care of this 2-3" snowpack very quickly.

Thinking we have a good chance at overachieving temps as we head into March with such a widespread dry landscape.  Hopefully 70s are less than a month away.
