Itstrainingtime
I'll be completely transparent here - I'm about at the point that I'm almost afraid to fly anymore. When I was younger I spent a lot of time flying solo all across the country, mostly chasing sporting events. LA, Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, Orlando, San Fran...when I was in my late teens into my early 20s I took so many trips. Flying was easy...no TSA, very few restrictions, etc. Of course, 9/11 changed all of that. Understandably so. But flying today to me is a hassle. Long lines, angry people, delayed flights (and missed connections) have worn me down. I now look for reasons to travel by rail or car. This year, our family is going to Disney in August. Most are flying, I'm taking the Auto Train out of Lorton VA. Doing so actually feels like a part of my vacation. On top of that, as I get older I'm starting to become more and more fearful of things out of my control. Flying is at the top of that list. Last time I flew was coming home from Dallas almost 2 years ago. Flew into MDT, the winds that night were gusting to 50 ( @canderson) and our plane was bouncing and buckling all over the place on approach. Then we had to circle and try again. The entire time I'm a mess. 35-40 years ago I likely would have thought it was a cool experience. Today...notsomuch. I can't begin to describe the helpless, sick feeling I had last night (and still do) thinking about that incident and what those poor souls must have...I can't even finish. I am a protector by nature. I'm the guy who ALWAYS sits facing the door, and all my friends and family know it.( they don't even question any more) i always know more then 1 way out and have a game plan if shit goes south. i am always on alert so to speak. So traveling is tough for me. i am usually exausted by days end. It sucks really and i have changed a little since being sick last year. But i'm told i have been this way, even as a toddler. 21 minutes ago, Itstrainingtime said: It sounds like they were all pretty young, I think? Just horrific. His exact quote to defend his stance was "because I have common sense, that's why." As a conservative, it's nothing short of an embarrassment. Would that happen now? Ironically, 2 days ago I was reading a random story about high winds blowing a truck over on it's side on the Girard Point Bridge in Philadelphia, the bridge that I take directly to the stadium complex. Apparently, the truck driver and his dog were trapped precariously close to plunging into the river when a guy jumped out of his car, climbed on top of the side of the truck and was able to pull out both the driver and his pet. I think this happened just a few years ago? There are still some heroic people around today. Every day all across the country, average people do extraordinary things, we just don't hear about them. Every day, fireman, cops, medics and solders save lives, many say its their job. yes, however a normal person isn't going to knowingly put there self in harms way, its not natural. I really look at things differently after i was sick last year. There is absolutely no reason i am alive, other then i have something left to accomplish, the good lord has a plan. 55 minutes ago, Itstrainingtime said: Ironically, 2 days ago I was reading a random story about high winds blowing a truck over on it's side on the Girard Point Bridge in Philadelphia, the bridge that I take directly to the stadium complex. canderson
My friend's nephew was 16 - so yes it was teens who were trying out for national teams and all. @Itstrainingtime I understand your post about flying. I love it - but I'm weird. I can completely understand not liking the security theater, crowding, etc. But if it helps, flying has never been safer in America - ever - which is awful to say given last night's horrific accident. The Auto Train looks like a great way to get down to Florida - relaxing and all. Slow travel can often be the best kind of travel. Also, the guy who spoke this morning and blamed DEI is a garbage human being and his comments are, as always, abhorrent.

I neglected to mention in my post, and I was thinking about it - the irony is that flying is indeed much safer now than it was when I loved to fly. Youth, or being a young adult I think allowed me to have a more carefree attitude back then. I am probably an anomaly. I am a registered R, consider myself to be at the very least moderately conservative, but my vote does not always reflect that. I feel that the person in the highest office should live to a very high standard. At least that's what's important to me. And he falls woefully short of that. I was told for months to "vote policy" but I'm sorry, the highest ranking official in the country had better damn well be a good person.

So many brains have been broken but extreme news and social media and it's a cult like thing now. When politics start becoming identity for people, and a sport, is when it started to collapse. The complete disregard for humanity, facts and truth is just ... depressing as hell.

Itstrainingtime
If our forecast today was to be snowy, can you imagine what the weather thread would be like? Essentially, we were pretty much expected to get the equivalent of 5-10" of snow as of last evening, and now it's more like 2-5". We always remember the pain of busted snow forecasts but it does happen with rain events as well.

I'm kind of surprised that the NFL is back in New Orleans for the Super Bowl. Maybe this is unfair for me to say since I've never actually been in the building but I've always thought that the Superdome seems like a tomb. It comes across on TV as being very dark and uninspiring inside. Old too. A lot of the newer buildings are much brighter and vibrant...Ford Field, the place in Indy Atlanta, NRG in Houston and SoFi in LA are all "better" than the Superdome. And the Vikings place looks amazing.

I tend to agree it's not the best, but am thinking weather/location plays a roll into where the NFL selects to hold them.

You and Sauss were both posting about the same event (PSU Wrestling) in 2 different threads earlier. Thanks mate! I will say, if it's just going to be an "Orange Man bad" thread, I'll likely check out. Would just be so exhausting and I can get that so many other places ha. I would actually suggest we keep it to everything other than politics, only because I fear it could turn the board ugly and alter the dynamic of what has been, up until this point, a friendly little community. I would just hate to see our board lose what it has built over nonsense like that. Personally, I have always tried to refrain from talking politics and have only done so when others have initiated, like my comment the other day in the weather thread when I thought some stuff was being said that just went too far. But even then, I have no desire to argue about it on the daily and would prefer to continue seeing everyone as simply the weather weirdos I already do ha. Just one man's opinion. Also, as @Bubbler86 has said, I'm not really keen on the idea of two separate threads but am willing to give it a shot if it's what others want. We shall see. Here's to happy sledding! *hopefully*

And that is the intended spot for political convo. I was careful with my thread tags in the title and purposely left out politics but I have shared my personal viewpoint in what was hopefully a very honest and respectful way. There were multiple people who asked for this, and at least one asked for it a couple of years ago. I thought it was time to break out as I really want to keep our little community intact. If someone checks in to see what's happening with the weather and has to wade through 40+ posts just to find something weather-related, I'm sympathetic to that.

I totally agree about some people not wanting to wade through tons of non-weather posts on the weather board, and for that reason I support your efforts. Like I said, I just hope it doesn't devolve into nastiness. I'm cautiously optimistic that with this crew it will not. In other news, I heard some stat the other day, and I could be a little off here so apologies, that Embiid has missed over half the games in his entire career?? Just found that astounding but I guess it shouldn't be all that surprising.
