At a quick glance, last night was the first time since the end of December that I did not dip below freezing, low of 37, up to 47 now.

Got down to 29 just before midnight so the date goes eats logged with a below freezing low. 28 for the low this morning, 41 now.

18.3" here (approx 50% of average)

10.8" for February (only 0.9" below average)

27 days with at least 1" of snow cover and 46 days with at least a trace.

No records, but enough presence to remember what snow looks like.

It's all gone now except for sheltered areas and piles.

I have a couple of sad icy/melt patches left in my backyard. They should be gone today.

Highs:

EWR: 68 (2002)
NYC: 65 (1890)
LGA: 62 (1876)
JFK: 60 (1996)

Lows:

EWR: 8 (1990)
NYC: 7 (1990)
LGA: 9 (1990)
JFK: 9 (1990)

Historical:

1910 - Parts of Washington State were in the midst of a storm which produced 129 inches of snow at Laconia between the 24th and the 26th, a single storm record for the state. A series of storms, which began on the 23rd, led to a deadly avalanche on the first of March. By late on the 28th, the snow had changed to rain, setting the stage for disaster. (The Weather Channel)

1972 - The Buffalo Creek disaster occurred in the Buffalo Creek Hollow of Logan County in West Virginia. A coal slag dam on the Middle Fork of Buffalo Creek burst sending a fifty foot wall of water down a narrow valley killing 125 persons and causing 51 million dollars damage. Three days of rain atop a six inches snow cover prompted the dam break. (David Ludlum) (The Weather Channel)

1987 - A slow moving storm in the southwestern U.S. spread heavy snow from the southern and central Rockies into the Central High Plains Region. Totals in Colorado ranged up to 62 inches at Purgatory. Colorado Springs CO reported a February record of 14.8 inches of snow in 24 hours. Lander WY received four inches in one hour, 13 inches in seven hours, and a record storm total of 26 inches. High winds created near blizzard conditions at Colorado Springs. Fairplay CO reported 43 inches of snow, with drifts ten feet high. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1988 - Eight cities in the central and western U.S. reported new record high temperatures for the date, including Lamoni IA with a reading of 67 degrees. Temperatures in North Dakota were as warm as those in Florida. (The National Weather Summary)

1989 - An upper level weather disturbance brought snow to parts of the central U.S. which just one day earlier were enjoying temperatures in the 60s. Snowfall totals in Missouri ranged up to nine inches at Rolla. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1990 - Unseasonably cold weather followed in the wake of the winter storm in the northeastern U.S. Ten cities reported record low temperatures for the date, including Syracuse NY with a reading of 10 degrees below zero. Freezing temperatures in southeastern Virginia caused considerable damage to plants and fruit trees. The barometric pressure reading of 30.88 inches at Wilmington NC was February record for that location. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

2004 - A major snowstorm dumps up to 20 inches of snow in the Charlotte metropolitan area. Charlotte's third largest snowstorm on record accumulates 11.6 inches at the airport.

Lows:

EWR: 8 (1990)
NYC: 7 (1990)
LGA: 9 (1990)
JFK: 9 (1990)

A wild cold spell, it would be in the 80s 2 weeks later

Did we get any snow accumulations in any of the below storms?

Also didn't we have a 36 hour snowstorm on this date in 1991?

1991 (Tuesday)

A surprise snowstorm dumped 8.9" of wet snow, the biggest accumulation in eight years (when 17.6" buried the City on Feb. 11-12, 1983).  Because the temperature was just above freezing for much of the day, the snow didn't accumulate much on the streets or sidewalks.  This was the winter's third snowfall of five inches or more.

Hopefully we can break the under 5” streak in the coming years so it doesn’t surpass the record.

1990-91 was a much more interesting winter than this one and probably warmer too.... that February 26, 1991 snowstorm was my favorite between February 1983 and January 1996.

If NYC doesn't get 5" or more snow by November 23rd, the record will be tied and if it doesn't get 5" or more on November 24th, the record will fall.

Yeah, we had great storm tracks that winter. So we were able to have a snowy December even though it was the 10th warmest on record. Almost like an earlier version of 16-17 where it didn’t matter how warm it was since the benchmark track was locked in.

la nina or el nino?

snowy decembers usually portend well for us either way (see 2002-03).

Yeah I've never seen nearly 8" of snow melt so fast. Well other than last February

it was mostly above freezing even during the storm (33-34) and it lasted 36 hours and it really started accumulating at night.

a big surprise, I'm sure that storm wouldn't have been predicted with today's models either.

Is there any way to run today's models on past storms to see how they would have done?

No I meant the December storm. The day after it was 60 and then it rained

crazy, so we had two 8 inch snowstorms that winter? that's like a historic season compared to now (and compared to back then too.)

I think the city got less in December more in February. I only had like 2 or 3 in the late Feb storm and as previously mentioned alot melted so never had a depth of 7 or 8

Coming years? It looks like you would need to have snow on or before November 22, 2025 in order to not match or surpass that record?
