It’s just been the lack of usual long torchy stretches that have defined many of the past 6-7 winters. This winter almost reminds me of 2000-01 without the monster snowstorms. That winter wasn’t particularly cold at all, but it was almost totally devoid of torches so the snow just slowly piled up over the interior and didn’t melt all winter. March was pretty cold but that was more a function of so much storminess rather than arctic outbreaks ala 2014 or 2015.

that was also the last winter I recall having so much ice that just wouldn't melt because of the sustained basically climo cold and no torches, I lived in Waterbury then and we had a similar snow to ice storm, don't remember what date, but the driveway and walks were completely hit that winter

Do those have reverse these days?  The last machine I had was a 10 year old Motoski that I bought for a dollar in 1983.  It looked and rode like it was 40 years old at the time   I imagine they've come quite a way in the past 50 years.  It was a beast for my 10 year old self to try and manage.  My wife wants to rent some to try it out at some point.  I'm thinking a compromise is tracks for the SxS!

They have everything now…they are really something.  You need to rent some and try them now…listen to your wife.  You’ll be hooked. The power is also off the charts even in smaller cc machines.

Great pic Jeff.  Getting away and doing something you love in the snow, does wonders for the soul.  Puts things into a much better perspective than just getting angry at what we may or may not be missing out on at home.

Below was from Sunday morning at 10 am…leaving for Canada that morning…trails were absolutely Superb.

The SXS with tracks is an entirely different animal and, in my opinion, nowhere near as fun as a snowmobile.  Those seem really best suited for working in snowy areas more than pleasure riding.  Also, I'm not sure if they are allowed on snowmobile trails in NH, they aren't in VT.

A guy from Philly in the ENSO thread drew that parallel, but of course, I quickly reorted that it was nothing like that year in terms of snowfall in SNE. It was a weak Modoki La Nina, like this year. I'm just so fed up with finding every way possible to avoid the snow....its gotten to the point where I just want to jump down the throat of someone drawing comparions to a season that didn't suck.

this is a fact. i hooked up with some buddies on Saturday and did a nice 115 mile ride. it has been 3 years since i have been able to do that, and it was a ton of fun. early winter I was having thoughts about selling my sled. now that I have been out a few times, I changed my mind

Yeah I don’t know how anyone could say we’re done looking at ensembles. Def doesn’t look like an end to winter.

We might even get something next Friday. But even if that fails and ends up warmer, early March looks pretty primed for chances.

3/8 is my crystal ball date...it follows the weekend rule

I went sledding in Kokanee (sp?) by Banff like 25 years ago - or more. Was amazing, went thru slide zones and way above tree line. My buddy Steve hit a submerged stump and nearly tore the right sled off the machine. Had to put two hands on the left handle to make it go straight so the return trip thru some serious no fall zones was harrowing.  Went near Tahoe 2 years ago as well - what an amazingly fun activity to take a day away from the slopes. I could see myself getting more into it as I retire in several years.

Some of us pat ourselves on the back for remembering the big snowstorms from that year.  You remember the other days in between.  Just a whole 'nother level.

Man! If you have not ridden a modern snowmobile when you try one you'll think you're having fun with a totally different sport! Apples and oranges is a far insufficient description of how modern snowmobiles perform.. especially if you ride skidoo. Back in 2002 I had a chance to ride the Prototype Ski-Doo REV at a dealer in Lyndonville vermont. We put a deposit down that afternoon for the following year as soon as we got back to the showroom.  Ride like butter!

That was my first winter as a weenie and I only remember the 3 biggies and a moderate one in March after the infamous 3/5/01 which caused my family to miss our flight to Florida. Perhaps Will knows the date of that one?

12-27 grand or so.  High end muscle sled with all the bells and whistles are 23 grand plus tax.  Low-Mid power sleds with the basics are much more reasonable at 11-13 grand.

I can't wait to get back in the sport but with my family's budget I'm going to be buying a couple of $2,000 revs from back in 2005! I guess I know what I'll be doing with most of the check from Elon

It's in the extended so tfwiw ... but this 12z op Euro definitely retreats deep winter mid way through this run.   By mid way thru the first week of Mar the hydostratic height (thickness) tapestry S of the Can/U.S. border is increasingly more flaccid, with a lot of > 540 showing up as far N of central IL-OH valley.    Spring vibe for sure.

Definite south trend on the 28th threat today. EURO went south too major hit for CNE/NNE

Yeah the shortwave is attenuating too so it wouldn’t shock me to see further south trends on that. No guarantees of course but one of the themes of some of our underperforming and “SE trend” snow events this year has been attenuating shortwaves upon approach…maybe this one can work in our favor. Might be too much to ask in 2024-25 winter though.

I actually don't hate the 28th   - heh, things break according to the tele's that's the last snow event of the season  ( prior to bowling ball times.. but those are something else)

But the flow is relaxed(ing) with more a backed off EPO allowing the western component ridge of the total +PNA mode to maybe for once this year actually pop a bit more.    Just setting the table here...

They only attenuate if we are in the cross hairs.....inland waves rip a hole in the strat.
