January 9-11th Snow Event

Chicago Storm

This morning's DAB has contributed to something on the order of a dozen slide-offs around southern Wisconsin already, and that's just on the major highway systems that get shown on the state DOT's live map. Many of the major Interstates/US highways around the Madison area are parking lots at the moment.

lol @ IWX being forced to issue headlines for 2-4" because neighboring offices decided to do it.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 320 AM EST Fri Jan 10 2025

The winter weather forecast for today remains on track with
widespread 2 to 4 inches of snow expected. The winter weather
advisory was a byproduct of neighboring offices hoisting advisories.

Honestly, 2-4" of synoptic snow with very cold temps and very frozen ground is not a bad call at all. Not sure about IWX, but GRR issues an advisory anytime a lake squall is possible, and it often looks silly. Then they will stick with an advisory when an actual storm rolls through with 4-7" lol.

Very quickly have gone to big fluffy flakes. Great start, didnt even plan on snow til 4pm. Forecast of 2-4" looks solid, and if these ratios hold should end up on the higher end.

Tiny flakes over here.  Been snowing since mid morning and not really accumulating much.

I also laughed about that when I read it this morning, but we have less than inch down and roads are trashed. As usual, lots of wrecks and slide-offs, so it ended up being a good call, whether wanted to or not.

Dry air completely winning here in Toledo. Not good news for accumulations, the ground is completely bare here

We are the absolute worst when it comes to dry air.  It funnels right down through Ontario and we are the last to saturate.  Dealt with it my entire life.  I think I knew what virga was when I was 5 and hated it ever since, lol.  We have about another 30 minutes to go...

Winter wonderland outside with a fast start. Already over an inch.

Crazy how the snow can come from south to north but Detroit ends up with a quicker accumulation than us due to orographic lift and a column that clearly saturates faster up there than here. Toledo is a frustrating place to live when you want it to snow...

After further review, it looks like Detroit actually got some enhancement off of Lake Erie as it headed north of Toledo.  Toledo is definitely a screw zone.

Heavy banding started the event. Definitely think 4" is doable. Already looks like this at 5pm. Toledo should still get 2 or so. Long way to go.

Zero accumulation in Toledo and the snow is coming over us towards you, LOL.
