Yup. Anthony is great. He never, ever gives up hope. He needs to change his name back to MetsFanforLife. We had better luck.

I agree totally. Since he changed his name to MJO five of the last six winters have been bad, three of the six all time top ten bad.

I can't stand the Mutts, but I want that name back. It may be the only thing that can save us.

He also used snow88 way back in the day. I think that name brought us our best winters. There's an obvious correlation and powers at work that he may not even be aware of.

Was probably intended to be humorous but inappropriate especially given how fast BS gets spread on social media these days, and then people twist into misinformation. Then the panic headlines “NWS predicts up to 40” of snow this weekend”. I knew the zonked up GFS runs with 20+ amounts would be everywhere and sure enough.

Bingo.  Inappropriate post.   The risks aren't worth the possibility of gaining followers through perceived humor (even if intentions were there.) Bad move on individual/s responsible for social media.

Government agencies have been using different mediums of media for decades now, unfortunately.

Sadly, NWS has decided (or someone else decided for them in leadership,) that it is worth doing.  Facts.  It's a societal issue.

The National Park Service account has become one of my favorites to follow. Perfect blend of humor but also informative at the same time. Many state accounts do the same thing (NJGov) is pretty hilarious too.

NWS can do it too. Just need an equal blend of humor and legitimate info.

Personally I think their post was perfectly fine. It gave me a good laugh.

What risk? I don’t understand this generation of people who cry and complain about everything and can’t take a joke. There is nothing wrong with “not knowing” or being “unsure”. At least it’s honest rather than these losers on YouTube and FB hyping a single model run to drum up viewers. I would repost that and let the haters be damned.

I have always considered the NWS to be the gold standard of forecasting and posts for lulz that look like they came from random internet kid weather page diminishes the brand. The graphic numbers shared is disappointing, I'm glad they took it down, and I hope they carry their office with the decorum and respect theyve earned and deserve going forward.

I hear ya.  I'm not trying to be a Debby downer.  I get the humor as well.  But the mere fact that you and I are participating on a weather forum would suggest we are able to interpret the post as humor.   The issue, is that the image may (will) be shared and then poorly interpreted by those who are unaware.  This has consequences .... (most which I find the humor in as well.  ...and lead to even better memes.)

I'm the last person that you'll ever hear arguing for censorship.   They can post whatever they wish.  However, as a government organization, it would be prudent for them to find a more responsible way of messaging.

Just my opinion.   We live in a slightly dumbed-down world.  Sadly, social media is more harmful than beneficial, despite the laughs that come from it.

They should have said 100" then the attempt at expressing humor and maybe a wee bit of frustration would have been more obvious.  I'm ok with their post.

This is a very good point.  I'm not amped up over the topic one way or the other, however thanks to the bountiful storms of the last 20 years, 40" isn't high enough to be an obvious joke.  As we all know, we've had actual maps from not too long ago with 24-36" which verified and/or were on the *low* side.  If you said 40" in 1990, it would have been an obvious joke.  You might as well have said 50 bajiliion inches.

I did a poor job articulating my point.   What it comes down to is the fact that they are a tax-payer funded organization.  Id rather not see humor mixed within their social media posts, particularly when the vast majority of citizens cannot differentiate between humor and advisories.

Simply my opinion.  I'm wrong a lot.  I guess I'm aging myself, but I'm a bit of a traditionalist, and miss the days of straight-forward relay of information from professionals (particularly tax payer funded agencies.)

I mean realistically, they only have 180k followers. Getting posts out to grow your following organically helps down the road when it matters Imo

I dont need government agencies that I consider the Gold Standard of anything to be social media comedians.

Especially because so much bullshit gets posted and reposted by people…in this case with regards to weather.

One thing they tell us about Pilot PAs…skip the jokes/slang/unprofessional opinion. It is beneath the role of the pilot and you never know who you are going to offend.

A few years ago I was on a flight from MCI to LGA and the pilot came on the PA and said “we are gonna fly it like we stole it” It was funny. Except, the role of a pilot is to be safe and then timely. And you can bet your ass that if something happened on that flight because he was rushing, that very public PA would be used against him.

Leave the jokes to Mr G “some snow or some snow”

NWS stick to dry “just the facts mam” reports

Figured most level-headed posters here would see this, which is why I shared the NWS post/graphic earlier today.  I actually saw it first on a Rutgers sports board where I post weather info by a guy who posts all kinds of nutty conspiracy crap, so I then went to the NWS-Philly FB page to see if it was real and it was and then I posted that I thought it was irresponsible.  The response was mostly derision, although 30 min later someone took the ridiculous graphic down.  I simply don't think scientific personnel responsible for public safety should be posting misleading crap - no issue with humor, but figure out a way to do that without compromising the science.

I know it's the NAM (and I'm grasping at anything at this point) but look at the interaction with the northern piece at HR 48....I think this one will be closer

When looking at NAM looking early in run for any positives is the best. Remember sampling will only get better from tonight into tomorrow.

Final frame...996 off NC...likely sliding NE but we'll have to see....

Looks terrible aloft and is hanging back far too much energy, this wouldn't yield anything good for us (other than some consultation snow showers from the northern stream).

But it looks like everything else at this point

That doesn’t answer the question. If there was more interaction early on or a positive in terms of leaving less energy behind in the SW that would be a plus and that’s all I would take from the NAM at this point until tomorrow night.

I think a lighter more suppressed storm is favored at this time due to the fast west to east suppressed seasonal pattern but that could change. The time-frame definitely bares watching.
