CoastalWx
5 minutes ago, bncho said: If any mets are in here, can they explain why the snow growth is kinda bad? I'm eyeing another band to hit my area around 7:30. I need the snow growth to be better. I need some fatties. I mentioned yesterday that snow growth may not be great. The DGZ is rather small and higher up in the atmosphere. Most of the forcing is from the 850-700 area with some of the heaviest echoes producing better flakes as that lift reaches deeper into the atmosphere. So basically you have the lower vis, small flake type stuff. This aftn will be better snow growth, but probably a lot of that 3/4 to 1SM type snow where even though the vis isn’t that low, it still adds up.

WxUSAF
Was getting a little subsidence ahead of that band for the last 20 mins or so, but now both flake size and rates picking back up as it approaches. Should be a good next hour+ for HoCo. I was always skeptical of ratios much more than 10:1 with the WAA precipitation except for the far north folks. For dendrites, you want temps in the snow growth area aloft between -10 and -20C. And also aligned with the best vertical motion AND not overly strong horizontal winds. Didn't really look like that before this evening's snow. 3

CoastalWx
Pinging may get close to DC. At the least you’ll probably notice that “noisy” snow that’s rimed and audible as it hits the ground, leaves etc.

Didn't really look like that before this evening's snow. We go through this every season. Folks have visions of high ratio fluff, but it takes perfect conditions to pull off. It’s never easy and it’s not all about surface temps like so many believe.

Guidance yesterday all had this window around 12z as the farthest north push of the warm air with greatest chance of mixing. wxdude64
I pulled the gauge before bed last night 1 amish, had 4 inches on the ground and snow was almost like graupel, knew it about to flip sleet. That melted down to 0.43 liquid, so close to a 10-1 ratio. Headed out to measure and flip gauges again for 7 am CoCoRaHS, just eyeballing I'd say 3-4 inches of sleet has fallen and 6 or 7 inches of 'white stuff' (still mostly sleet, but a tiny bit of ice is on objects) is out there. I'll be back. Oh, it warmed up overnight, currently 29.6/28.5.
