Just wondering but does anyone monitor ice thickness and issue statements when the lake is safe for winter activities?

That's a good question. I went to the DCL State Park boat ramp and just walked out on the lake. A lot of people took their snowmobiles out on the lake via that ramp as well. There was nothing there about the ice - but there has to be something, somewhere because in this day, you can't just have trial and error as people fall through and sink to the bottom and go oopsie, not thick enough yet.

14 here for avlow.  The joke about +8 to its close by surroundings and Annap. Potomac frozen and Bay down to about Annap.  Does not remedy the error.
Norfolk closest match at 26 for a liw at 26 with DCA 22 and all else around DC area 12-16

Low here was 19.  PWS around DCA (both in VA and DC) reported lows of 19-30F.  Nothing at all inconsistent with what DCA reported.  Do you understand how UHI works?

I'm thinking about taking a trip to the Tug Hill sometime in early Feb (I'm hoping to catch a lake effect event). My main reason is to check out the extensive snowpack and ride snowmobiles. They have hundreds of miles of groomed trails all over the Tug. I'm actually thinking about staying up there next winter while my business operations are suspended due to winter. Before I start researching, does anyone on here have suggestions, tips, info on that area?

Probably 70% here, but I am in the woods. Out in the open areas its probably about 50.

It will all be pretty much gone by Thursday. Hell of a run with snow otg. 20+ days

That was the best storm we had on the 6th. It was just as memorable as some of the HECS we've had. It was a beautiful cold storm followed by cold temps and low sun angle. I'm satisfied with my snowpack duration. I'm ready for more snow even if it's gone by 10am the next day.

Went to Terrapin today for a hike. Not surprising that there is more ice on the bay than I have seen in 10 years. I'll post a few pics later.

I was at Sandy Point. It was pretty non existent on the bayside but looking across, it seemed a decent amount of ice on the eastern shore side of the Bay. The marina and the channel at the park is completely iced over.
