My temp is 8°. Coldest morning this week. Both days that FCPS did a 2 hr delay the low here was only 13-14°. But now that it’s colder everything is on time. SMH

A drunkard doesn't care how foolish he looks. (Eh, many of us have been there). But the next day, he regrets it; and might even apologize to his friends. Public schools, OTOH, don't care and will apparently never care.

Temp up to 8 on the drive in.

No, that’s farther west than I go

I have a question for someone at NWS about the "Cold Advisory"  that they issue.  We all had a Cold Advisory that originally started Monday night which originally  continued to Thursday at 10 or 11 am (which completely made sense).  However, when I saw that they changed it to end yesterday, I couldn't understand why,   I read the forecast discussion about it on Tuesday night to see what had changed, and they mentioned that they didn't think the temperatures met the criteria.  However, most of the DMV entire area was forecast to be in the single digits (I'm in Fairfax county), and it was actually 6 degrees at my house at 5 am.  It wasn't this cold on Tuesday when we did have a "cold advisory".  I'm just confused about the criteria for the advisory if we didn't meet that today. I assume that is why several school systems went on time today despite it actually being forecast to be colder than Tuesday (and it was in reality as well).

Did they change the name to High Point the day after you graduated?  :P

And no 2hr delay, despite temps being in the same 0-5 ballpark compared to the last two days where there was a 2hr delay. LOL

Being in NY yesterday irt schools was interesting. I was (endlessly) digging out my car and it was -16 and the day before mby had over 50 inches of snow. And what goes lumbering by at 7 AM? School buses. A small parade of them with kids inside. I know they are used to the snow, but was just a pretty stark juxtaposition to our area.

I prefer to think that they made a decision based on how things played out during the two days prior, i.e., that there was no issue with the buses and so school could start on time.

This makes the most sense, but FCPS should also do a better job of explaining its decisions.  As it is, the contrived reasons and/or non-explanations for recent delay and cancellation decisions beg the conclusion that they are just being arbitrary.

They clearly are not paying attention to teachers who have schools and  classrooms that are 50 degrees or for walkers, or kids waiting at bus stops for 10 or more minutes.  Many of the kids around here either do not own or don't have outerwear equipped for this kind of weather.  And not all the parents are able to drive their walkers to school.

That is BS.  There were no problems either of the previous two days.  The only thing different is there was not a WInd Chill Advisory this morning.  If they were late the pervious two days because of temps... they should have been late today.  There was no reason for 2 hours late or closures for the last three days.

Sure there was. They don't count late starts against minimum school days, so no need for makeups or virtual class.

So you are saying kids do not have a winter coat, gloves, and a hat?  That is really all that is needed.  If they do not have that equipment... They cannot be possibly be dressed for any weather under freezing.  Most if not all Elementary school kids have a parent at the bus stop or walking them to school.  Yes it was cold, but not two hours late cold.  Plus it did not warm up that much... so those kids face the same thing going home.

Oh I know... that is why they were two hours late.  Any time a school district can be two hours late, they will be, and it is not about the kids.  How much did the temp really warm in those 2 hours?  1 or 2 degrees.  Everyone needs to read between the lines.  It is just like giving half days just because the marking period ended.
