Paleocene
In the annals of terrible management of schools, this just in from Montgomery County Schools MD. They had previously (tues evening) called a two hour delay for Thursday, in advance. Now, they have cancelled that. Good News! Thanks to better-than-expected road conditions and the outstanding efforts of MCPS staff to treat and clear ice from our school sites, we’re excited to announce that Montgomery County Public Schools will operate on a Code Green schedule with normal operations on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025. Please exercise caution in your travels and dress appropriately for the cold temperatures. Important Note: All MCPS school-sponsored activities, including athletics and community use of schools, will also proceed as scheduled this evening, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. While this reversal of our decision may cause some confusion, this is truly an MCPS Moment of Joy, as we look forward to returning to the energy and excitement of full-time teaching and learning! adelphi_sky
Perhaps we should track snowpack. I think we may be approaching the longest number of days with visible snow on the ground. I know there was one time sow was on the ground for three weeks. We still have snow on our street. Which is pretty amazing. Days of snow on roadways. Days of snow on grass.
RIC_WX
Cabin at Deep Creek bottomed out at -12.8 this morning. This is the lowest observation there since 2022. The below zero readings for three consecutive nights is unprecedented for me during my time at this property going back to 2021. Impressive cold!
WEATHER53
DCA disgraceful again as the MIC told me 20 years ago when we stopped communicating as much-“We work for the FAA. The FAA does not care if it’s 20 or 25. We don’t work for the NWS nor weather weenies”
CAPE
High of 17. 2 straight days in the mid to upper teens doesnt happen too often. With clear skies tonight, should get down around 5.
dailylurker
Today was a beautiful winter day. I hiked out to Annopoils Rocks today. It was only about 13 degrees at the summit. Their was about 5" of powder on top of a couple inches of old snow.

I could be +10 from IAD.

dailylurker
I would of loved being up there for a storm. I bet the hike was awesome. The snow was really powdery and the trail was really squeaky packed powder. I could really cruise. 10/10 trail conditions. You don't even need micro spikes. I didn't see one person today. Down to 15 already.

Also I'm pretty sure it's important to the FAA and pilots in general what the actual temperature is.

Mbusada1
Just makes you wonder HOW cold it was in that location when the record was set. -27 there this morning. Elkins was -15, Lewisburg -2 and WSS -4. I know you can't correlate exactly, but if all those stations were -28 to -37 on that morning makes you think Canaan would/could have been in -40 to -45 range easy.I may be wrong, but I think the record was set in that location. It’s in the Canaan National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a natural cold sink and it’s the lowest point in the valley. It’s often 10-12 cooler there than other spots in the valley. Down to 15 already. It was amazing for the first part. I went all the way to black rock so the last 2 miles out of 8 was a bit of a slog, got some amazing pictures of icicles and the snow. Also saw some of the heaviest snow I've ever seen with snow fog obscuring visibility to the end of straight parts of the trail. Would highly recommend going there next time us lowlanders are going to fail, though did have to learn how to drive on snow covered roads for the first time on the way back for 20 miles. Regardless, made an awesome Sunday. 1
