They have not all been cleared and are still extremely icy. Kids are all able to make it to the sledding hill, which happens to be at a school! They could probably make it to school too. 1

BCPS is opening 2 hours late and I agree with them. People are going to have a rough time getting out of their neighborhoods before the sun has a chance to do its thing. wxdude64
Moving this here- Amazing what a little prodding will do, they 'sorta' changed from 3.0 to 5.7 as of today. that is a lot closer to what others in the area reported.
weathercoins
I’m heading to Florida on Thursday for family and JetBlue has informed me of a “travel advisory” because of “winter storm Cora” in the southern plains allows me to change my flight for free. Did not realize DCA was now in the southern plains

toolsheds
Been wanting to ask this question about the new Euro AI model. Isn't it just the Euro "Next Gen" version? Aren't all of the models calculates using AI? Not trying to Nitpick, but I feel that that term is really overused and don't see the difference with a computer model other than some of the inputs and updated calculations. There are significant differences. At a very high level, AI models are trained on reanalysis data. It is analog/pattern recognition on steroids. I think there are some traditional modeling-like guard rails involved, but others that have more knowledge should chime in. Traditional models are physics-based, solving numerical fluid dynamics equations and then adding in parameterizations for things that can't be realistically calculated (and some tuning for good measure).

snowfan
Lunch hour headline on wbal…..frigid temps expected for ravens game. when did we become so soft? It’s an outdoor game in January. This has been happening since the dawn of professional football. I’m pretty sure folks in attendance will survive. End rant.

Reid sent out a message explaining why apparently Hello FCPS Staff and Families, As we navigate through another day of cold weather and icy roads, I want to express my deepest appreciation for your patience as we work to reopen our schools to students and staff. I also remain inspired by our outstanding custodial, facilities, transportation, and grounds crews who continue to work around the clock to ensure the safety of our schools and vehicles. I want to provide an update on tomorrow’s school status. The Virginia Department of Transportation has been prioritizing clearing secondary roads, however clearing bus stops and sidewalks has continued to be problematic. Many sidewalks and bus stops (we have 45,000 bus stops!) continue to be covered in snow. With that in mind, we feel that closing all Fairfax County public schools tomorrow, Thursday, January 9, 2025, is the best decision until we can ensure safe travel to and from school. While schools will be closed, school offices and central offices will open to the public at 10 a.m.
