@WEATHER53

Wanted to answer your question. We sold our Rockville house in early September. All pre-planned over the last 4 years or so. We've wanted out of HCOL MoCo and unfriendly crowds for a decade but kids, schools, and all that jazz doesn't allow life to be simple lol.

We chose the general Smith Mtn lake area because it's a recreational paradise with minimal cost of living unless you want a lake front McMansion. Everything is a fraction of the cost and we downsized so financial stress is gone. Which is massively important because that stress was stealing years from me in MD.

We have a 25 acre tract of land in a remote section of Pittsylvania County with Leesville lake access. We also have a simple little place in Penhook with Smith Mtn lake access that serves as home base for now until we build our home on the land. The 2 properties are only 3 miles apart with a helicopter but a 20 minute drive due to topography and minimal roads lol.

Snow climo here is basically Roanoke so a downgrade there. I've stopped caring about that. Too many factors offset it and I've spent enough time chasing ghosts hahaha

Roanoke looks pretty nice to drive through and there seems to be some good trails around that area.  You also might not be too far from Harrisonburg, VA, which is supposed to have some legitimate mountain biking.  Snow is cool, but quality of life is more important.

The metro should be a lifesaver for anyone who needs to be out and about Monday. Might be fun to head into DC on the silver line and take some pictures

yes!! Come get some snowy pictures of the Capitol. I've been waiting for 2 years. Only place more beautiful than UVA in the snow might be DC.

And then I drive north to Syracuse where they are expecting 1-3 feet of lake effect this weekend. So will be a nice snowy week for me :snowing:

very much so haha

Went mostly remote during COVID (all in-office before that), then the announcement came in the beginning of this year to be in the office three days per week. Luckily, at the same time my company needed someone with my specific skills to run another program whose team has been fully distributed (per the contract) since before COVID. Been a nice move for many reasons, and working from home is definitely up there (especially because the old project may be back in the office full time soon)!

Honestly you can't go wrong anywhere near/along the National Mall. I'd get off at the Smithsonian stuff and just walk around. Tidal basin if you want water in your photos, Lincoln/Washington/Capitol Building if you want something imposing. Some of the gardens/sneakier spots near the Capitol would be cool to photograph. Some more subtle monuments and views you'd see just circling the building.
