Re: the Bourbon street attack - that is just so soul-crushing. That was literally where I just was for two of the three Billy Strings New Orleans shows - couldn’t make the NYE show because had to be back, so flew home yesterday. Our hotel was four blocks from where it happened. We literally spent large parts of Sunday snd especially Monday exploring the French quarter and met so many cool strangers (wearing a billy strings concert shirt when they are in a town is a cheat code to quick friendships) - and between the concert goers, the Georgia and notre dame fans, and general NYE attendees, the vibe and mood was immaculate.  Just devastating to wake up to. I am so worried for some of the crew we met who were staying much closer to where it happened - the interval between when the NYE concert ended and when the attack occurred was two hours, enough time for folks to make their way back from the venue to the Quarter.

as always, so senseless. Just soul renderingly sad for me to process, everything is so fresh from what had been two pretty magical days. I hope the people we met are ok. So devastated for the lives torn apart.

sorry to be a bummer on new years morning, but this news hit me like an anvil to the face.

Ji quick question on Jays Wintry Mix...why do people who hate snow follow and post on there? Is it for the high level well thought out riveting commentary? Inquiring minds want to know

Happy new year! Maybe it’s the same reason why packers fan post in the Vikings forum.

Every winter it is the same. We get an influx of users who think post quantity is more important than quality. Just remember - sometimes it's like when the principal at your school knows you...better to NOT be known by the principal as that means you're probably not getting in trouble on the regular. It's OK to lurk and learn. And I'm not saying this as an elitist. Many of us were in your same position long (or not so long) ago.

Running up am absurd number of posts in a short amount of time isn't going to garner you any extra camaraderie around here.

Or heck...maybe a minimum character/word count. While it's still possible to s**t post a longer post - it takes more effort. The difference between "Looks tasty" versus "At hour x, the shortwave responsible for our storm looks a bit stronger/better defined. Not sure what that means for the end result with the confluence,  however" is night and day. And the second variation there takes almost no additional effort other than some extra keystrokes to type.

Who am I to judge. After all, I just ate a cannoli. :bag:

I ain't judging you on that.  My daughter made an oreo cake with buttercream icing that used two whole sticks of butter.  TWO.  It did not deter me.

I hate being a B about it and it’s our first real storm minus minor events we’ve seen, so I get it. Everyone is giddy and ready. But oooof some terrible analysis going on by some.

I mean let's just be honest - the "it's been a while" excuse holds true just a tiny bit. We'd have the same issue if we had an incoming storm after seeing 20 inches. I keep trying to stress too that I'm not trying to be "better" than the newbies. But it's totally speaking from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. It does take some willpower to not post as much - but it pays dividends.

I tried to reply to this, but some of my arteries clogged just by reading it. Had to lie down for a few minutes.

Food is love. (Old Greek saying)

Each forum community….regardless of topic (sports, politics, business, weather) is different. Some forums really dgaf about the frequency of posts or quality. Others do.

also, this really shouldn’t be directed solely at newbies. You still have long timers like ravens making dick jokes in every storm thread and Randy doing weak play by play when the models are running.

Well put. And I'd add that if you're feeling emotional about a run (particularly if it's negative), just don't post. It'll rarely do anything productive, lol

I think this would belong in the banter thread, correct me if I'm wrong. I just wanted to express this.

I have such a respect for people in the meteorology field who don't allow their biases to ruin the integrity of their analysis/forecasting. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being in this field and having a bias, we're all human. There's also nothing wrong with expressing your bias to your audience. There needs to be a line that isn't crossed when you start providing the people with pattern information, though. You need to be able to say, "Although I'd like to see..., realistically this is what we're dealing with."

No meteorologist is ever going to be 100% accurate. It's just not the way things are meant to be. There are too many variables and moving parts. Some of these people out there on social media make this profession look a lot worse than it should be, and it's mainly because they allow their bias to bleed all over the information they put out to the public. They pick out model solutions that better suit what they are rooting for and plaster it out there, even when they know it's not the most likely result. When you have a significant following, I believe you have a responsibility. You know EXACTLY the types I'm referring to.
