I don't think thats really correct. 10" off Lake Huron that produces blizzard conditions for 2 days still produced blizzard conditions whether or not it melted within 5 days because its "fake" Im at 9" now on the season and have had over 1" on the ground for 2 weeks plus. The snow on the ground though has never gone above 2-3" and though it helps raise the grade of the winter barely it's useless to me since its been just above grass tips for most of it. I do understand what your saying though

That's why there's a liquid precip, snowfall, and snow depth column for each day.

Im also not trying to say the airport is messing up but most of the NWS spotters in that area report 5-9" on the ground. Still compacting but 30" of lake snow to 5-9" makes more sense. Well actually I am saying that haha

Yeah there is supposed to be a "user friendly" area at all these sites to measure snow and depth properly. Near wind scoured fields or salt splashed roads are as bad as measuring a drift or snow bank.
RogueWaves
Just measured 1.3" new snow from this evening. Had just cleared the driveway this afternoon from yesterday's hit. 1-2 inches in my forecast for next clipper Monday. That one actually has the look of doing better. Picked up a nice metal yard stick that can penetrate down through the crusty under covering making accurate depth measuring much easier. Knocking on the 30" door and exactly 50% of an avg season - we winter
michsnowfreak
With early morning flurries, Detroit has now seen snow fall on 26 of the past 28 days. Today is the half way mark of the snow season at DTW (meaning the climatological avg would have seen half the snow fall and half the snow to come still)

Chinook
Sometimes this 0-1km mean wind, intended for severe weather, can help predict surface winds/wind gusts. In this case, 37 knots is almost exactly Toledo (TDZ) max gust at this time in the afternoon.

roardog
It’s crazy how windy it’s been here today. Usually we need some kind of decent storm to get 50+ gusts. It’s even more unusual to get that with warm air advection.

This helping out no doubt Drifts were massive after work in near bliz conditions - worst since Dec's clipper delivered all those Squall Warnings.
michsnowfreak
DTW gusted to 52mph today. Hit 38°, which ties for warmest of the month. Snowcover crust didn't budge in shade but eroding in sun. This isn't my pic but thought it was an awesome pic of a Detroit River sunset.

Snowstorms
Intense squall line ripping through the area right now along an arctic cold front. Blizzard like conditions. Maxim
Curious as to why LOT significantly lowered Thursday's highs across the CWA. Still looks on track to be well into the 50s areawide IMO, so I'm not really sure what they're seeing. Guess we'll see.

I would imagine 50s in Chicagoland would be close to a record for January 30. Edit: Yes, looks like the record is 55F.

There have been plenty of January days in the 60s (all-time record is 67), so it's really not that crazy at all.

Since it isn't continuing and we are getting more stormy it will be difficult to get high ice % with this new pattern with the up and down temps and lots of wind. Going to be interesting to see if we can go above average for ice in the end. I personally think we will make a run at the end of February/ early March. Would be pretty remarkable considering the lake temp warmth going into November. We'll see.
