Bob, ask yourself... have you spent a lot of time outside the US? Do you have a good sense of other places and cultures, their history and political systems? Do you have an intelligent and diverse group of friends who can challenge you? Do you read a diverse selection of news? Or do you listen to political talk radio and watch Fox "news"?

Be honest, do you believe you have the right foundation in life to understand and discuss politics?

I'm ok with it. It's too important not to talk about. Anything over the line will be dealt with. This goes for everyone.

There were 2 posters throwing personal insults at each other. At the very least that shouldn't be allowed. And as I said, BxEngine has said politics BS isn't allowed here. I'm sure he will delete all this stuff when he sees it.

But you know BxEngine is going to flip out when he sees all this lol.

BxEngine and I agree with each other on basically everything when it comes to the NYC subforum. We have each other's backs.  I wasn't going against him the other day. I just didn't really care in the moment bc I was having an incredibly rough day at work. We're all human.

It's not.  Unless it becomes overboard.  I think we should probably stick to the NOAA stuff in here though.

Actually, in all seriousness, I think you are right. This is a forum for discussing weather. This should all be deleted.

But before that, I would like to encourage all like-minded people to be ready and willing to challenge less-informed people when they advance ignorant political attacks. We should be ready to counter them aggressively... In any and all public forums. We were way too gentle and tolerant last time around. Gloves come off this time.

We usually wouldn't allow this at all.  What's happening is too important not to let adults speak about this outside the cesspool that is OT.  If people from other subs join in I will delete their comments.  I would love if people can keep it respectful but it's really hard not to be upset at some of the stuff that's going on.

Seconded. The job of moderator is hard. No reason to make it harder.

I could see allowing politics talk here if people can do it in a respectful manner. You're right about that OT ... it's an absolute cesspool. But the reason it's a cesspool is because people curse each other out and treat each other like garbage because they can't agree on politics. That's already starting to happen in the debate here.

You say you and BxEngine are on the same page, but he has always been very strict that political BS isn't allowed here. I doubt he has had a change of heart, so I wouldn't be surprised if he deletes all of this when he sees it. But who knows, maybe you guys will agree on a politics allowed policy here now.

Listen, here's a real world consequence..... a lot of us live near airports.  We've seen what' happened over the past week or so.  We're worried.... and we have a reason to be.

It doesn't matter which party or which person is in charge, certain standards and safety regulations should be permanently in place no matter what.

I also want to let you know that I appreciate you. I'll always remember how you had my back in OT even though you didn't agree with what I was saying.

I mean, if we’re on weather boards in our spare time, I doubt any of us are idiots, right?

I just don’t think name-calling or insulting others helps change minds.

I don’t think anyone would go on a date, insult our date, and then hope they will immediately see the error of their ways and beginning to change. It’s why I don’t like or voted for the current office holder.

.

I thought exactly like this for the past 8 years. I tried to listen, engage, and educate. But sadly I observed that repetitive jokes and insults leveled at "the left" had a normalizing and equalizing effect on politics. The lack of a strong response to most of those trivial, baseless attacks created an unconscious impression in otherwise uninformed voters that there was merit in the critiques. It gave rise to a tangible perception; a gut feeling that there was legitimacy there and that both sides had candidates deserving of consideration on merit. No amount of logic or reason could counter this emotional response. Human beings have a reflexive aversion to people who are bullied. Tragically, they respond positively to aggression and insults. I guess psychologically, nobody wants to be in the group being picked on.

That's kind of how I feel. But in my case, I am very troubled by it.

I'm disturbed that I've had to lower most expectations so low but it has reduced the disappointment and turned it into understanding. I'm a salesman, I have to figure out how to be edit from the next few years or I have to go find a low paying service job because that's about all that'll be left soon.

The demonization of good science, from climate/weather to vaccines to public health, in general, by this Administration (among other things) is unconscionable and will set this country back in many ways and make it less safe and less healthy.

I’m reading this this morning and I think to get your point across, it doesn’t help to encourage the person you’re speaking with to question if they’re smart enough to understand the world.

If I’m at work and I need your help on a project, I don’t think rhetorically asking you if you’re smart enough is going to help you see my point of view or what I’m working to accomplish. It may in fact make you think I’m difficult to work with and you’ll do the bare minimum but nothing more.

We all work with people we think we’re smarter or better than; actively reminding them of that can work against our self-interests.

We're not colleagues. And I posted at Bob, but I'm not speaking to Bob. Bob is gone, lost.

Everything runs in cycles and oscillates from one extreme to the other.

I'm sure we'll have a strong rubber band effect in 4 years, maybe even 2.

I think we'd be much better off emulating Europe in many ways. climate science, food science, public health, etc.  Way too many big money interests are allowed to fester here and it's why our society is much less healthy (and has been since about 2000 when the diabetes epidemic began here.)

Might be a longer cycle this time though. They have stacked the deck with the media, the courts, local election officials, restrictive voter laws, intimidation, meddling, foreign interference. And the damage done may take a lot longer to recover from. And this doesn't feel like an oscillation. What was the other side of the pendulum before this? This feels more like a turn; a deviation.

Europe has its faults too. There's too much nationalism and cultural pride to allow full cooperation between countries or cultural harmony within ethnically diverse nations. And they love their traditions, which can slow the pace of modernization. We had the chance to be the best of both words here, with our melting pot culture. We could have set the example by observing and adopting the best aspects of other places. Instead we seem intent on wanting to be the worst.
