The Pacific jet didn't help during those years, just scouring out any cooler air in Canada. This year, we saw some of the cold pockets actually come up and over the poles, down into eastern Canada. I don't know if there is actually a why? Almost like a roulette wheel, a game of chance where the cold air will drop into to? Of course it will follow the path of least resistance, which some can explain better than myself...
Krs4Lfe
On a side note, I wonder how much we ever stop and appreciate that this forum has been around since late 2010, and has active discussion about storms leading up the event, observations during the event, and then post-event analysis for almost every weather event that has happened in CONUS since late 2010. This has to be the only site like that. There are sub-forums that encompass the whole country (even though the Tennessee River Valley and West forum aren’t that active). Just like a treasure trove of model runs, forecasts, and observations as they happen in real time. I wonder if this site will become a historical marker one day ?

I really think Boxing Day was my favorite storm of all time despite living through multiple HECS. I lived in North Brunswick then which was near one of the maxes in NJ. Especially coming just after the holiday was the perfect chef’s kiss on the whole thing. Sadly the only big storm I’ve been able to experience live here was 1/29/22 and that was only a real big one for like myself and LI, but was still exciting overall.

Easy answers would be more land mass in the northern hemisphere as well as more ice and snow and landmass in the South Pole while the North Pole eyes is melting. However the answer may not be that simple.

But Eurasia which has a much larger landmass is much warmer-- look at all that warm air over Europe and Siberia

That of course Plus all that ice down there where the North Pole is losing ice and has less land mass to house snow.

I worked 6 months as a media archivist for a news company when I was younger. Made me appreciate how much of a time capsule obscure moments in history can be. That’s especially true with weather. Modeling images in a lot of storm threads are dead links.

Is it even possible that the greater NYC metro area can see a snowstorm >40", or a scenario of direct back to back storms totaling over that amount?
