Here's an interesting thought: some models were predicting an historic snowstorm, perhaps the greatest of all time for parts of southeastern Louisiana, and the storm over-performed.

10 inches of snow in the Florida Panhandle wow.

Had COVID during the second half of our Iceland trip in December, it totally sucked but I made the most out of it for our outdoor activities. Hiking with a fever is not recommended.. :weep:.

Thought that was probably it for the season for me, and last night a fever hit me like a ton of bricks from out of nowhere. By 5am I was up to 103F. Absolute ass.

You could have RSV, a lot of stuff is going around this year.

Cold and dry is the absolute worst weather for viral spread, virus particles hang around in the air for longer distances and are spread more quickly.

Remember this general rule of thumb:

cold + dry increases viral spread

warm + humid increases bacterial spread

Thanks man, I’m not well familiar with this RSV but I’ve definitely been hearing about it popping up. I should look into it.

I just don’t like how quick this went from 0-60, but viruses do that sometimes and thinking back to our trip - COVID did that too. We were just settling down to go bed in a hotel way out by an awesome winter hiking spot and I started feeling progressively worse and worse, very quickly. Next morning - boom 102 fever. Took a few days for the other symptoms to get going which thankfully weren’t too bad, but the fever itself was horrendous.

Looks like the Hudson is freezing over already and ice breakers are being used there and ferry service is being canceled on the Hudson.

Firefighters are having major problems fighting fires because fire hydrants are freezing up and water is turning to ice on contact.

I went out to Seaside today to check on my parent’s house, who are away for a while. Driving over the bridge I noticed the bay was about 60-70% frozen! Crazy! Not something I see every year, that’s for sure.

I had mine back in October 2023 when I was sick for 3 weeks. =\ My fever was up around 104 too.

Not a doctor here, but if you're an adult with a fever like that and you still have it now, get yourself to a doctor.  Fever out of the blue like that could be pneumonia.  Have someone listen to your lungs.  Happened to me.  Get well soon!

My wife had RSV last year and for a couple of days it was pretty scary. Fever over 104, I took her to emergency. Once they got her to 102 with fever reducers they let her go. We were there maybe 5 hours. It took her a good two to three weeks to fully recover and she's active, athletic, eats well and all that. You should probably see a doctor tomorrow just to find out.

I wonder why this crap is happening now, 10 years ago we never heard of RSV.

RSV can lead to pneumonia.  That's what my sister was worried about.  However she was in no shape to go see a doctor or even go down the stairs because she had such a problem breathing and was wheezing.  She called her doctor and he prescribed her prednisone which I picked up at the pharmacy.

RSV tends to have outbreaks impacting adults every 4-6 years or so.  In general we have immunity to it that lasts several years whereas children usually get very sick from it the first time around.  I think when the strain alters enough that the immunity wears off we have outbreaks like this winter.  I recall in 17/18 there was an outbreak impacting people middle aged and up.  I definitely had it 2-3 weeks ago following like 4 people I work with having it.  No runny nose or sneezing and no fever just a horrid sore throat that became a nasty dry cough.  Usually in adults there is a pronounced lack of runny nose/sneezing vs the cold which can be a tip off thats what you have.  Doctor told me at my physical in December there has been nearly no covid or flu this winter, at least as of then on 12/15 and all he was seeing was RSV/colds.

Looks like Hudson Bay is finally iced over.  Some of the eastern ice might not be thick or fully consolidated, so latent heat fluxes might still be greater than normal for this time of year, but Hudson Bay won't be much of a modifier for the rest of the winter.  An artic push directly into our area from the north would have some sting.
