We went in 2012 I think it was. Stayed at my cousins in Middleton. Went to the distillery. A drunk Irish guy grabbed me cause I tipped the bartender and they don’t do that lol

we also had good and warm weather

I made a video of the Reeks hike...the three highest peaks in Ireland in unusual summer weather.  Banter, but it seems to be today's motif:

This was the first -9° around SMQ since 14-15. They came close in January 18. While they only got a little colder in January 1994, other areas in NJ were much colder than anything seen in recent decades. Sussex County, NJ approached -30°. The CAA was so intense in January 1985 that Newark was -8° while SMQ only -7°. Newark got down to -7° in January 1982 and SMQ made it down to -12°. SMQ was -15° in January 1981.

It’s interesting that the coldest Arctic outbreaks across the U.S. in recent years have been more radiational cooling based with snow cover as we just saw in Louisiana. This was also the case in Illinois in January 2019. The intensity of the cold was also shorter lasting than when we would see record cold in the past. The older Arctic outbreaks in the 70s through 90s had significantly lower 850mb to surface temps and were with a much more extensive geographic footprint. So places near the coast and in urban areas which rely on CAA and and much colder airmass frequently saw record lows during that era.

wow absolutely fascinating Chris, each arctic outbreak had its own personality!!

Something else I find interesting is how much more frequent the subzero arctic outbreaks were prior to 1985 and how rare they have become since then.  January 1994 and then nothing until February 2016.

The ones I remember offhand were January 1977, December 1980, January 1981 (two that season!), January 1982, January 1984, January 1985..... then a gap...... January 1994 (two that month)....... then an even larger gap and then February 2016.

We probably would have had a subzero arctic outbreak in the 1982-83 winter too if we didn't have a super el nino!  Otherwise we had one in every winter from 1980-81 through 1984-85!

I'm defining subzero arctic outbreak as one in one one of the four metro area stations (NYC, EWR, LGA, JFK) reached 0 or lower for at least one low.  Did I miss any or were those the ones that happened in the period starting from the 1976-77 winter until now?

Confirmed that there was a period of OES snow flurries on a south wind over the south fork this morning.  I'm watching a replay now.  Can anyone say "procrastination".

What was the lowest temperature recorded in Louisiana? I read that they were forecast to get to zero or at least close?

Airport snow depths can be wonky.  It is difficult to visualize this progression at ISP:

Date                     Max              Min           Precip  Snowfall  SnowDepth

Temperatures will mainly reach the upper 20s to near 30° in New York City through Saturday. It will then turn milder on Sunday. The thermometer could reach the upper 30s on Sunday. The milder weather will likely continue through Tuesday before another cold front arrives.

The AO is now positive and is expected to remain predominantly positive into at least the middle of first week of February. As a result, prospects for a 6" or above snowstorm in the New York City area will be limited. Since 1950, just 2 of 19 (11%) of storms with an AO of +2.000 or above during January 15-February 15 saw 6" or more of snow in New York City. Opportunities for a 6" or above snowstorm could persist for parts of southern New England, including Boston, through January.

A sustained milder period could develop during or after the first week of February.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was -0.1°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was -0.6°C for the week centered around January 15. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged -0.07°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged -0.75°C. La Niña conditions are underway and will likely persist into the start of spring.

The SOI was +10.60 yesterday.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +2.963 today.

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied near 100% probability that New York City will have a colder than normal January (1991-2020 normal). January will likely finish with a mean temperature near 29.6° (4.3° below normal).

I just happened to be watching the news which I never do… And they had a whole segment with Nick Gregory on how they suspended fire Island service due to the ice in the Great South Bay.

I guess I haven’t seen him in a while. He looks awful. Almost scary aging

Drive down to Robert Moses. The ice in the bay is a sight to see. And some deer too
