see I blame the school for this, no self respecting school would begin that early.  School should be from 9 am to 4 pm that's it.

If they have a lot of bussed students, they have to stagger times to have enough transportation. Special ed students often start even earlier because they often have to travel to schools across town, as there aren't programs in every school. Some even have to travel to other districts an hour away.

and triple the amount of school bus drivers - plus how are school crossing guards going to deal with working in the dark ?

This is why any permanent DST scheme likely won't last.   Most weren't alive when it was tried in 1973-74 and if anything we are all softer these days so folks will freakout with their little snowflake walking in the dark to the bus or school

I used to go in at 715 but got out at 2

I taught in Ocean county and HS started at 7;15 and the kids were dismissed at 1;20. This was because nearly all the kids were bussed. I was expected to stay until 2, but back in those days it was still ok for a teacher to leave if they had no classes to teach. Now they give you an ankle bracelet at the beginning of the day. Glad to be retired.

Outstanding Don!

What about since 1970, Don?

What about NYC's coldest month with less than 3 inches of snow, Don? (and since 1970?)

Since 1970: Coldest winter: Winter 1972-73: DJF Mean temperature: 35.6°; Seasonal snowfall: 2.8"

Coldest Month: December 1989: Monthly mean temperature: 25.9°; Monthly snowfall: 1.4"

Some are doing this now in the 6AM to 730 timeframe, mainly for highschool and JH as well as more northern areas ME and WA, Lakes areas with even later sun rises.

Just got my gas bill for last 30 days.  Highest I have ever had while living here (since May 2016) by better than $100.  Combination of energy costs and persistent cold.  Can't even imagine what it would be like if we had some 70's and 80's era type cold.  We're not reckless with the thermostat either.

Yeah its been crazy but nothing like our first winter here when it was $1100 one month. We hadn't winterized yet and its a 100 year old house

I've been chewing through my wood pellet stash rapido.  I think the wind was sucking the heat out of my house exacerbating the already cold temps.  No wind and mild is welcome, but I'd trade it for a storm all day long.  Don't see anything now that I feel great about tho.

We could use a slight amount of SE ridging to our south. That’s one way to get the precip to slide up along the coast. Not a horrible look but it’s still very far out.

You risk tainting at the coast, but in this type of pattern, it’s worth chancing to bump some precip up against the cold air.

I still think we score one warning-level criteria event before we mild up on Feb.  Also a chance we sneak something in March when wavelengths shorten…not uncommon in Niña years.

I knew December 1989 would pop in at some point.

If we see very little snowfall this month and it stays cold it should be our #1 analog.

Feels much better out there at 39 degrees with much less wind. I'm leaving now for deer hunting. I did not go the last 3 days ... there was no way in hell I was gonna sit up in a tree with 40mph winds and brutal wind chills, lol. But today isn't bad.

I like cold too, but wind is absolutely useless.

I fully understand we need cold for snow but in no way shape or form do we need wind, it can go away and has.

Yes, the wind wastes all your heat, it's the main reason I hate it.  I keep my heat at 70 and the space heater in my bedroom at 80.

are you serious?!  mine is always over 1000 in January and you live in a much colder climate (it's windier here though-- I REALLY HATE THE WIND!)

My fuel bill was always around $1,000 per month.  With pellets I cut it in half (ish.)  I still burn SOME oil.  Pellets were a lot cheaper 10 yrs ago when oil was still high, so I don't save as much.
