This is more of a trivia thing Walt, but when was the last time we had an inch of snow between the first day of winter and Christmas and when it happened what percentage of the time did it result in a white Christmas?

Am not following up.  I will say this. This event is the way I more frequently remember in the 50s60s. Blowing drifting cold.  This is a more reasonable start to winter.

98 had 1-3" of snow on Christmas eve morning with just enough left to qualify for a white Christmas

Elevation helps a lot in these marginal temp events.   Was in downtown Somerville last night and virtually nothing OTG.  On the hill the ground was completely covered.

At roughly 3.5F per 1000 feet in elevation, you're probably close to 1.5F colder than folks at 100'.  Certainly makes a difference.

Took a ride out to Hunterdon County to go to Sweet Melissa Patisserie (the best bakery in NJ IMO) to bring home some dessert for tonight, and it was really nice out there (they got over 4 inches). It's always beautiful driving through the country after a snowfall .... snow falling out of the trees and beautiful scenes with the farms covered with snow.

Anyway back here at home I'm already starting to see some patches of bare ground in the sunny areas. A couple inches of snow doesn't last long when it's sunny with temps near freezing, but of course the snow will stay on the ground for days in spots that get more shade.

And they’re the low total as usual. Other places in Manhattan had 2-3”. Boggles my mind how it’s used as NYC’s official total.

Oddly enough those totals at JFK/LGA seem somewhat suspicious to me at same time.  I'm not sure how LGA added one more inch and JFK 0.7 more after 7am.

1998. 2" fell on 12/24/1998. Although the snow depth figure is missing from 12/25, the high and low on 12/24 was 32-23 and it was 33-24 on 12/25. Almost certainly, snow depth was 1" or more on 12/25. Before than, 1983.

It was snowing pretty hard here for awhile between 7 am and 8:30 am and abruptly ended at 9 am when the sun came out.

Do we have the updated liquid equivalents for all these stations too?

Are these two good analogs for this winter, Don?  Both were la ninas that also came after el ninos, although they were much stronger than this one (and the la ninas those two winters were also much stronger.)

A few moderate events but no big ones.
