As a weather geek, I find it amazing what transpired yesterday in the deep south.  Parishes in New Orleans got 6"+ of snow and parts of N Florida had 4-8" of snow with some wind swept powder.  Incredible.

My brother said 8” in SW GA.

My brother and SIL are in Hilton Head SC and got 2" - 3" of sleet right on the coast.  He sent me pictures today and it looked like full winter smack down with palm fronds blowing in the background. Once in a lifetime event for so many people.

Both options suck , but I think if you had to choose dry and cold is better. Rainy warm winters ruin everything.

down to 7.0 here, don't think I'll get as low as last night...on the preference of winter, if it ain't going to snow, I'd prefer warmer, cold dry sucks in a lot of ways, including energy bills. my attic office is well insulated but still needs a lot of heat in winter and A/C in summer, but winter is worse... just bought a great new heater though, makes it toasty at half the wattage.

What kind of heater?

A normal January in progress up here.

The past couple days have featured -15 and -14 departures but the monthly departure is +0.7.  It still takes an act of god to get a below normal month.  We’ll take average.

Normal temps in the means, 24/10 average down in the valley, which is more than enough cold for a winter month to feel like a winter month.

Down to 7.9.  I was stuck at 11 for a few hours.

Without wind, it doesn't take much more effort to keep the house heated with exterior of 7F.... vs 25F.  Just maintaining a low/moderate burn in the living room and house is 75F.  If winds were 15, 20mph, I'd be burning a lot more and maybe even supplementing with the oil or propane.

This is like a “standard above normal” month … which after multi season acclimation must seem colder than normal.

actually … PVD and BOS are both -1 right now.

Its been much colder than normal lately as you head south.  We’ve been below freezing for a while but the coldest anomalies are definitely south.

-10F here vs 26F half a foot of powder on the GOM palm tree beaches… what’s more impressive .

That matches the temp anomaly products that have routinely demoed warm air that morphs to the cold side only when it advects beneath 50 or so n. That’s been a recurring cinema.

This pattern setting up in 1976 might have been more like cold at both ends ;)

Tues and weds morning lows hit-23 to -25, this morning we didn't radiate efficiently due to cloud cover. I love how the body adjusts to cold weather. It was 5 degrees last night when I took the dog out before bed. We were outside for almost 30 mins and I didn't wear a hat or mittens. It was so much "warmer" than the 2 prior nights where it was -12 when I took the dog out. But before this cold snap, 5 degrees felt like Antarctica
