Cold and dry at least keeps the mud at bay. Last two winters were absolutely triggering with that.

Agreed. If there’s some snow OTG, I’ll def take cold and dry. At least it feels like winter out there with snow and ice all around and seeing all the ponds/lakes frozen here.

Last two winters felt like fooking Vancouver…40s and rain every 3 days. Awful.

But if it’s bare ground, I dunno…might take the warmth, but I really hate rain too. The “ideal” torch winter is prob very dry like ‘01-02.

Cold and dry for me.  Skiing is much better in these conditions (albeit this is pretty darned cold)

Yeah skiing is definitely way better in cold/dry winters. Also, up north a lot of places do well in upslope and leftover lake effect in cold/dry patterns. The upslope zones have been basically nature’s snow guns for the last few weeks.

We also had a lot of 50’s to near 60 rains last winter . Quite a few

It seems like this winter has been dragging…just cold and boring. At this point I’m just ready for late spring/summer. I wish we could get front loaded winters. By mid-to-late February I’m really ready for late spring. If this is an awful spring it’s going to be a grueling haul moving into Summer.

This year we face a drought heading into spring and summer. Probably a return to the Gypsy moth

2023 I saw several gypsy tents.  But it seems the 1980s when I was growing up we had a LOT more of them.  I remember my grandfather smearing grease around the trunks of his trees and torching any nests that developed.  Almost an every-year event.

Those things better not come back for a long time. They did a number on the forest behind my house. There was one year you could just here all of them eating the leaves every time you went outside.

TBH some of my favorite winter memories were skiing Cannon in the 80's. Of course the wind is usually up at the summit, even on more subdued days.  Snowmaking was rather primitive then and they're trying to blow snow near Avalanche, but it's blowing wayyy over Paulies folly and evaporating/gone into the air.  Maybe some trees were caked :D

End of February and March is when I need to get the hell out of here and head south for a bit.  Mind is ready for spring, but momma nature just lags along.

Sounded like steady rain.  I still have several big standing dead oaks shedding branches on the property over time.  Awful.

Down to -4. Hopefully we are done with lows like this morning (-25.2); that was just stupid painful.

That’s normal for NNE, need to stop with this.  We get lows in the negative 20 range ever year.  Montana just had -40, this isn’t anything close to record breaking.
