I've been in 35 below twice, it hurts at that temp.

We had -42 on Dec 20, 1980 in Fort Kent, 2nd coldest in our 10 years there.  Our chief forester had gassed up at the office, climbed in, shut the door and backed up while looking over his right shoulder.  But the door latch was stiff and failed to hold, allowing the door to swing open and make minor contact with a parked car.  When he tried to shut the door, it fell off, the steel hinges having snapped in the cold.  He waited until noon when the temp got up to -20, but it was still a cold 2-mile door-less trip to the dealer.

18z GFS signaling Groundhog Day again ...  Only 11 days away, too, so very high confidence -

Like all other systems this winter, this is modeled exactly the same - it's like we've been in the same pattern for 90 straight days.  Very unusual... pattern gestation is typically 4 to 6 weeks.  We've doubled that, marked just by the behavior of N/stream failing captures, and models still showing the same damn shit.   It's basically because the ridge is too far west, so the flow east over the continent ends up too flat.

in other words, needle thread as the southern piece out-paces.

The friends and relatives I have in the deep south have said it’s incredible that there has been snow on the ground all day and now a night in the 20s.

tell them while this is happening, no less -

Cold and dry sucks.  If it's gonna be cold let's get some snow.  Would rather have warm and wet.

Cold and dry.  Despite the heating bills, I like winter to feel like winter thanks.

Both options suck , but I think if you had to choose dry and cold is better. Rainy warm winters ruin everything.

Many all time records fell and several other 2nds and 3rds all time.  Feb 1899 and Jan 1985 were really the two comparable cold spells, both with the core of the cold focused a bit further east.  But it was insane this morning.  New Iberia hit 2, Lafayette 4, Mobile 6, Gulfport/Biloxi 7
