Yeah, the City has been an absolute disaster this winter. Since the 1st I've seen one salt truck and I live on a major artery. I'm not sure I'll get to work tomorrow, at least not in the morning. This is unacceptable.

Rd9108
Yeah don't go out if you don't have to. 31st bridge is covered in snow and ice. Penn Avenue was barely touched. Most of the Northside barely touched.

I think preparation is still a function of total snow forecasted. Usually a forecast of an inch or two has pretty minimal resources needed. But having it fall steadily over 4 hours when it’s 15 degrees is something different. Not sure if they just look at forecasts or actually consult with someone. Steady rates, low temps, and rush hour, should be treated with a little more urgency than a typical 1-2” snowfall.

SteelCity87
Ended up with over 2" yesterday. Hopefully something similar tomorrow. Despite nothing big and being average on the year it has been a great winter. I'm sure how lousy the last two were helps with that. Been busy with work, traveling, kids and watching football. For context, 2024 was the warmest year on record by a full degree - including downtown observations. January has been cold so far, but its only 25th coldest on record. A bit of a difference comparing a cold two-week period versus beating a 12-month annual record by an entire degree. With the cold next week, no doubt we will climb up the list and perhaps make it into the top 10 or 15 coldest starts to January. But there is still more than half the month left. And for further context, meteorological winter to date is about as "normal" as it gets. Tied with 3 prior years for 71st chilliest [of 151 years].
TheClimateChanger
While snowfall to date is right around normal (see below) at PIT, we have already eclipsed last winter's total of 16.3 inches and are sitting just 1 inch shy of the 17.6" total from the winter of 2022-23. We will likely eclipse that winter on Thursday.

Burghblizz
Good NWS discussion today. Basically saying that even though there may not be a widespread 3” average to meet advisory criteria, the cold temps along with Tuesdays road issues helped build the case. It should be flexible based on impact. I think we see a high floor with totals today(2+). Good ratios, and interested to see if there is banding later. Ahoff
Any hope we can squeak out snow on Sunday to aid the brutal cold Monday and Tuesday? I just worry we’ll lose a good bit of the snow pack on Saturday.

I'm thinking the RGEM is too slow with the boundary hence why it's our best chance right now. Most of the other models have the boundary progressing further east hence why we miss out on the snow. Gonna have to wait and see as we get closer.

The most recent GFS run suggests around an inch of snow on Saturday, with temperatures no higher than the mid 30s. 10:1 ratio even higher, but probably unrealistic given thermal conditions. Pinpointing when the boundary gets hung up is not a high confidence forecast but looks like GFS finally jumped onboard of there even being a storm. 6 minutes ago, Burghblizz said: Meanwhile - it’s thumping now Looks like a pretty good slug about to move through. TheClimateChanger
Is it just me or do we get way more snow than they say? My flat picnic table in the backyard clearly has over a foot of snow on it, but they say only a foot has fallen all month? So nothing has melted, sublimated or blown off the table in two weeks? Is your house on one of the runways at the airport? There has been a lot of localized banding during this period, and one decent storm that had a sharp cutoff. I’m probably around 18-20” for the season here.
