This was alright I guess.  A nice freshening up for sure.  CPC seems to think the back half of the month should be cold and wetter than normal.  Late January might be our time for a better storm.  Maybe the 18th-20th we need to look at.

I also wonder if this could be one of those rare Januarys that fails to reach 50 degrees. It's early, but the extended looks to stay cold.

If you like winter, well you are in luck for the next few weeks. Obviously still have to be lucky for storm track, baroclinic boundary etc but that's quite a signal from the GFS. Let's hope the Steelers can pull out a win in the meantime.

That's looking better than the game so far.

I think it’s high time for a coaching change.  This one and done in the playoffs is really old.

I guess since the warm month streak is likely over, we don't need to know, lol.  All in good fun.

Just got back from skiing and looked at the Euro and my lord that's some cold signal it's showing. Negative temps for a brief time with us bottoming out at -14 and a windchill of -24.

Dang, to bad the gfs ends at 384, it was in the middle of an epic storm, we are getting a major ice storm after 8-12 of snow with more fun on the way. (For entertainment purposes only)

Yeah looked epic. I think we will have a nice period of tracking coming up. Now whether or not we get heavy snow is a whole other issue. We are due for a good snow storm since our last big storm was last year at 3.3 and prior to that was 2022 with 8 inches.

I think after 2 solid weeks of relatively deep cold and NW flow I'll be ready to roll the dice on something with higher upside. Once the lakes start to ice over this current pattern will lose most of any potential upside options outside of a vigorous clipper or miller B type redevelopment.

Now that the we look to be heading more towards a +NAO  and -EPO I'd expect some cold outbreaks but they should be more progressive. A more moisture laden or overrunning event event even if we mix or rain for a portion wouldn't be the worst, of course an all snow event would be fine too.  The type of setup being advertised is more likely to end up further NW outside of some perfectly timed northern stream vort squashing everything so seeing things a little more SE right now isn't the worst. Never any guarantees so hopefully the interesting looks for next week hold.

Crazy how balmy 31 degrees felt this morning.

Light snow and temperature at 16, deep winter! Maybe we can squeeze a couple inches out of these next 2 light events.

Saturday looks mixy, maybe it can trend better.

Next week still looks interesting too.

Yep. Other than Saturday the next 10 days will be cold. :shiver:

I feel we’ll lose a good bit of the snow pack Saturday, and if we can’t build any back Saturday night into Sunday, the extreme cold forecast will be a bit more moderate.

It's only Tuesday I wouldn't count out any snow before the Siberian express comes to visit.

I think Thursday will be better than today. 1-2 inches. Saturday is trending colder so we may have snow Friday night and more of a mix Saturday then back to snow.

NWS thinks so too.

Friday Night
A chance of snow after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Saturday
Rain and snow. High near 38. Chance of precipitation is 90%.
Saturday Night
A chance of snow before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 19. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Sunday
A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
Sunday Night
A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 6. Chance of precipitation is 40%

Oh, not counting anything out, just not sure what we actually have in store for the weekend.  Seeing warmer temps, but no snow on the point and clicks and then writes seem to be talking about snow, with no real mention of the brief warm up.  Just confused is all.  If the Euro is to be believed, could be interesting times ahead.

Special Weather Statement
for Allegheny County

Issued by National Weather Service
Pittsburgh, PA
5:34 PM EST Tue, Jan 14, 2025

...Areas of Light Snow May Impact Road Conditions...

A broad area of light snow will continue for the next few hours that will lower visibility to 1 mile or less and create light accumulations on roadways. Additional heavier showers may develop this evening and also create quick accumulations on roadways, with gusty wind limiting visibility. Melting snow from vehicle activity could refreeze as area temperature remains well below freezing.

Exercise caution driving this evening as roads may become slick, with potential for melting snow from cars to freeze on surfaces due to low air temperature.

Thursday does look a little more robust right now. Could be another 1-2 for sure.

Closing in on a fresh inch right now.

Went out to eat in Cranberry tonight. Looked like a full fledged snowstorm for awhile :D

Roads were horrible. Really only a slight over performer - but with temps around 15 everything is sticking. People are complaining that the “weather people don’t know what they are doing” - lol.

We are probably somewhere between 1.5-2”, with a forecast of an inch. But the decent rates and cold temps made a huge difference.
