I think the biggest question on everyone’s mind is whether PIT may see its first below normal month since August 2023. Through the first ten days of the month, December is sitting at -1.2F. My inclination, however, is no. The month will probably finish above normal. We shall see.

Departure down to -0.6F as of yesterday. With a high temperature of 58F earlier, today should push it into the positive range for the first time this month.

I heard that all last winter.... the long range never came.
Getting the feeling this is going to be another below normal winter. Maybe much below normal again. Maybe not as bad as last year, but wouldn't surprise me if we end up with 20 to 25 inches for the season. I have nothing scientific backing me up on that, just a feel. Unfortunately, I had that feel at the beginning of last winter as well.

Pleasant surprise this morning. Looks like we still have showers rolling through the area and then that Christmas eve wave could still drop another inch to give everybody a white Christmas. After that looks like the New Year we see a new pattern develop and then we can really start tracking winter events. I don't share your guys pessimism I think we atleast reach average totals this year.

So far it's been nice with a few bursts and a few small top ups to keep everything fresh and white, but after a couple weeks with nothing and the bare ground/trees, it's hard not to feel pessimistic.

Nice little quick duster coming through now though!

Nice little event this morning! Probably close to an inch and its sticking to all the trees. Really festive look out there. Even some pavement caving.

Id say I'm more cautiously optimistic for early Jan than pessimistic.  Still no signs of a rug pull on the good looks so, fingers crossed. Too soon to nitpick details, but the general look could be fun.

Probability favors less than 30" on the season.  We've had a fair start for December purposes.  Below the 30-year average of 7.8" in the month, but the best December of the last four.  Seems we've paid a bit for that epic 2020 December.

That said, if you add up the last five Decembers, we still average around that 7" mark.  Quote: "That's how averages work!"  lol.

The good news in the long-term is, at least for now, we're not seeing a true blow torch pattern.  Odds are it shows up eventually, but we at least have cold coming in-and-out.  We'll moderate between Christmas and New Years, then afterwards another -EPO reinforcement sets up more cold air in the contiguous U.S.  Most of the teleconnections look favorable around early January, too.  MJO going into Phase 7, potentially.  -NAO and -AO.  Ridging out west and a trough setup over the East.  About all you can ask for in any given pattern.

We'll work out the discrete threats down the road.

I was thinking the same. Wouldn’t have been disruptive but looked great.

Streamers look to mean business this morning

Around the city and north and west of there based on radar looking like a pretty decent setup currently. Those things can definitely over perform. Think Ill be a little to far East based on wind trajectory.
