Central PA Winter 2024/2025

Recommended Posts

At 11:00am here in Carlisle the temperature is 32.2 degrees.  Pixie dust snow has been falling on and off for the past several hours.  It was enough to dust the mulch, grill cover, and some tree branches.  The intensity has picked up noticeably in the past 15 minutes to the heaviest rates it's been so far.  Still considered "light" with fine flakes, it's hard enough to begin whitening up the aforementioned areas again.  I think the most significant thing about the snow today is that it has only been 5 days since the last event.  Getting measurable twice in less than a week in December is quite the feat...lol.

Don't look now, but our vaunted incoming torch pattern is looking more like a whimper. Yeah, it'll be AN some, but most of the warmth gets stuck in Canada. But that reloads fast on modeling for some adequate, if not, decent cold in January.

All we'll need is precip.

Last night's CFS snow depth map as they don't offer CFS snowfall maps on Pivotal for some darn reason. Hopefully, not pay walled.

The Atlantic keeps protecting us.  Not cold at all but not a torch for highs.  Lot of MR and LR lows in the 40's (all day in the 40's, thank you marine layer).     On the GFS it does not go below freezing from Dec 28th-Jan 5th (MDT 6Z, 12Z seems a little colder).

Sorry

Oh no, don't be sorry. I'm genuinely happy for you. Things typically happen in cycles - there was a period from 2009 through 2016 where the southern tier did very well at the expense of up north. It started to feel awkward at how often we jackpotted while northern PA got hosed. Especially considering that northern PA "should" do better than us. What we're seeing lately is honestly more like how things should go respective to our climates.

Here in Carlisle, shortly before 1:30pm, it continues to snow lightly as it has been for the past 3 hours.  The temperature has varied between 31.8 and 32.2.  It's 32.0 right now.  There's been some light melting on my board so it's difficult to be totally certain of the measurement.  However, my best estimate is between 0.2" and 0.3".  It's been accumulating primarily on the grass and trees, especially evergreens.  Not even the mulch is white.  In about an hour from now the feeble effects of the sun will begin to diminish further, allowing for further accumulations.

Been burning coal since the 90’s $85 a ton.

This year $320 a ton. Still cheap warm heat.

I get mine for $200.00 a ton but have to pay my inlaw for delivery. I get 4 tons at a time. Last year coal was scarse at times. They had big trucks come in an get  the coal  from the breaker and it taken to ports to be shipped to China for $500.00 a ton.

So we are literally sending them "energy" to hack us.    Maybe y'all can send Embid on one of the shipments.

All I know is I’m going through 2 extra coal buckets a day.

First snow flurries.

In the late spring to early fall I use 17lbs. a day to heat just my hot water at a temp of 150. Now in December i'm averaging about 59.375lbs. a day, to heat hot water to a temp of 185 and heat the house with cast-iron baseboard fixtures.

You should see how much coal the train pulls out of Lehigh Anthracite here in Tamaqua. Most, if not all, of it goes overseas.

The trucks (ours included) haul the domestic, as well as some of the port loads.

Last year the breaker was shorting the locals here to a ton when they came to the breaker. But when those big trucks came in to get coal, there was no limit for them! So I imagine there was a contract.

We went by a port near Va. beach this summer on our way down to Nags Head and the piles of coal sitting there was unbelievable.

Overseas is one thing,  China is another.   Trump says they will be paying a lot more fit it next month.   We are not supposed to be using SMS texting on our phones because China used our coal to hack Verizon, ATT, etc.,
