A remarkably even temp distribution across the state, only a couple degrees warmer near the coast than the western Piedmont, with most everyone between 15 and 25 degrees as the low. Low temp of 21 in Wilmington is colder than Boston at 28

High pressure centered directly overhead and near perfect radiational cooling conditions. Teens into SC is impressive for Dec 4

Lows in my area: coldest of season to date

KSAV 27

KSVN 28

Some others: KATL 27 coldest of season

KGNV 26! @pcbjr had the coldest of these four locations and coldest for Hogtown to date this season. Radiation capital of the deep SE!

Interesting temperature spikes last night. We got down to 36 at 11, rose to almost 45 by 2, then fell for a second low of 39 right before sunrise before rapidly rising to 49 now. I’m guessing that’s related to inconsistent wind through the night at my location

I honestly can't think of another time when temps have risen overnight without any cloud cover or precip. Usually ahead of the front there's at least scattered precip and thick cloud cover. There's a lot of dry air to our SE which is odd too. I guess arctic fronts behave differently than a traditional cold front.

Looking at obs mine was most pronounced with initial cooling but Sanford and Louisburg had almost identical swings and the timing aligned perfectly with what my station saw. I’m guessing the wind calmed in the evening allowing for a period of radiational cooling then picked up for a period overnight before slackening off again before daybreak

I'm sure you're right. We had steady wind throughout the night and stayed steady throughout the night at 39 until around 6 am when it suddenly rose to 43. I think the wind shifted to a more Westerly component, which brought the higher few points.

The 1st week of Dec at KSAV has a shot at ending up the 6th coldest since 1874! Only colder for sure assuming I didn’t miss others: 2000, 1910, 1896, 1886, 1876. 1944 was very close.

Low today 25, coldest of season so far.

Edit: 2024 ends up tied with 1944 for 6th coldest 1st week of Dec since 1874.

When taking into account warming climo, 2024 looks like it is the 3rd coldest 1st week in Dec behind only #1 1876 and #2 2000!
