I know how annoying it can be to read about lake-effect snow for those outside the belts, but it's all we have right now. Winter Storm Watches are up in Michigan a couple row of counties along the shoreline. This reminds me of the Christmas lake-effect blizzard from two years ago... although not quite as cold or as windy. It's still going to create a mess and at least blizzard-like conditions. Hopefully the messaging gets out there. I imagine there's already some "snow fatigue" for those buried over the weekend.

At what point do we start buying the warmth coming mid to late month.  Was kind of hoping for a pattern reload towards the holidays with at least winter like weather but now the ensembles are caving.

Anything is better than the current pattern.

I don't mind the cold, yeah the dry sucks but it's time for cold. Nothing worse than my Xmas' spent in Cobb County, dreary and 50-70. One Xmas Eve it was top down on the Jeep and 73. Hard to feel in the holidays mood with that. If COVID wasn't bad enough, '20 was raining heavily and in the low 40s...added to the depression.

I'll take CAD all day if must

that's excellent. I think that's from ice clouds in the lower atmosphere, right? (no water droplets)

From space weather.com where they had a similar picture today - “Note the flared tops. That's what's unusual. Ordinary light pillars shoot straight into the sky with pointy tips. The V-shaped tops of these pillars are extremely rare.

The vast majority of light pillars are caused by ice crystals that look like tiny microscopic plates. However, ice crystals floating around the Rovaniemi airport were not little plates; instead, they were little pencils. Pencil-shaped ice crystals create the flare. To see the shape, common crystal plates must be absent. No one knows where they went! So there is an element of mystery, as well.”

The clipper has really ramped up the NW winds in Manitoba, with up to 35kt winds at 900mb tonight in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The cold air avoided us for so long, it's hard to believe the arctic blast is going to slide right in here. (Already measured 34kt, gale force, wind gusts at Brandon Manitoba)

1-3" around the NE MN/N WI area with the Grand Marais/Hovland area up in Cook county seeing 4-7". High wind warning up that way, too, for winds of 50-60 mph possible. Wind advisory out for a good chunk of the W sub today. Bands of CAA snow showers developing this morning as front has just passed through.

Missed mby by about 5 miles or so, but the ground has been white since Sunday night. Wind might take my hammock away today.

It was really weird. The snow squall conditions would last for about 30 seconds at a time for me. The main band stayed just to my south and was only about a mile wide for the most part.

Getting close to wind warning criteria, with gusts pushing 55mph.

Had a few sprinkles earlier with frontal passage.

EDIT:  DVN just gusted to 56mph.

EDIT2:  Chicago Midway apt just gusted to 58mph.

74mph with the thundersnow squall line at south haven and lots of other 50-60mph gusts with thundersnow in west and sw mi
