Tatamy
The line of echoes across western and NW NJ and eastern PS contains heavier snow showers. The rates are like a squall but the winds do not meet the criteria. In any case we have a fresh half inch here. 33/

North and West
Same thing around here. It is nuts. Never used to be this way. I get it if you want to put some salt down but several places as of late this afternoon were literally dumping it. I came out of an office building and had to do a double take to realize what was on the ground.Legal protection .
donsutherland1
Rain transitioned to large wet snowflakes in Larchmont. Some slush is building up on car windshields, but the ground is still too warm for any accumulation.

jm1220
Burst of light snow just ended. Snow on pavement mostly melted but some slush left. There was a half inch or so when I took the pics overnight. I’ll go with what @NorthShoreWx says for final total lol but glad to see we’re on the board and it was unexpected since this is a storm on a southerly flow. I guess the land component was enough not to completely torch it?

NittanyWx
8 hours ago, RU848789 said: Can you comment on whether the ECMWF AI model one sees in the model sites, like Pivotal (ECMWF-AIFS, for AI-enhanced deterministic global forecast) is the Google DeepMind GraphCast model referred to in the article below about AI and weather forecasting? The quote in one of the embedded tweets in the link below says, "The Google DeepMind GraphCast model is available on the ECMWF platform. It's open-source and can predict weather conditions 10 days in advance with better accuracy than current methods." If so, certainly the article below is at odds with your commentary on their accuracy. https://www.weforum.org/stories/2023/12/ai-weather-forecasting-climate-crisis/ They aren't the same. I have access to the Graphcast platform and people are already downloading the package and attempting to bias correct it in real time. Graphcast has, in the open source format, so far failed to beat regular ensemble EC forecasts far more often than not. If there's a skill impovement, I really haven't seen it so far.

Now they pre salt even though no freezing/accumulation is likely. It is really bad. Amphibians and many fish species are struggling near roadways. I firmly believe the salt use when not needed is to justify not cutting the treating budget as we warm. It is insane to see all the salt and brine used. It runs off and increases salinity in all our freshwater systems. It is also stressing plant life along roadways and one thing you can see is the trees near roads with heavy salt in the winter typically drop leaves earlier in the fall because of stress. There is currently a lot of research being done in this area. Our modern society needs to be able to accept delays during inclement weather.
