06z EPS increasing snowfall since the prior two runs for the 24hr period ending 12z/Saturday.  Doesn't mean its going to happen but continues to near watching despite minuscule 06z/16 op.

Elevation dependent is definitely the factor. I have 1/3” of slush here at 125’ of elevation.

Some nice snow totals in the area from last night. I picked up 1.5 for a total of 3 so far this season. 31 and cloudy now.

1.5” here.  down by the palisades mall a dusting, once you start climbing the hill a bit a pretty big difference.

In comparison to the elevations above 1000 feet listed a one here in Sussex County NJ,  little Old Wantage at 740'MSL 7.5" for the season.  We didnt have have over 7" last winter until....  Jan 6-7 of this year!  I'll take it, plus for us here in nw NJ...temps down to 12F a couple mornings ago, WITHOUT snow cover.  We're off to a good start.  More good start coming including but not limited to 12/20-21 snow (whatever it is), 12/22-23 coldest pf the season so far. and 12/25 (signs of a short wave undercutting the ridge similar to what happened this past night) permitting snow/ice here.  I'll add a CoCoRaHs snowfall map around 915A.  Gotta shovel now. 32.4 in this part of Wantage.

41 / 40 rain, (0.50 in the bucket so far last hour).  Warmer 4 days ahead with about an inch or so of rain today / Wed.   Tue upper 50s / near 60.   Colder by Fri, peaking Sat - Christmas eve looks mainly to be dry.  Warms up christmas to the close of the month as ridge pushes into the GL and EC..

snowfall last night... CoCoRaHs.  D yes not include multiple near 3" reports central SC in nw NJ.  Good enough for me to say 2-4" of snow was widespread along and n of I80 in ne PA, nwNJ--se NYS titrating down to 1-3" w Ct.

Warmer : 16 - 20th  peak +10 (17th)
Colder :  21 - 25th  peak - 12 or more  (21/22nd)

Missed another one. No snow between Morristown and Montville. Well maybe a light dusting of snow/ice on the mulch. I think the CAD held the cold along and to the west of the terrain fall line. So snow was basically confined to west/north of I-287. Pretty well modeled actually except slightly more snow than ice compared to the progs... although observation yesterday from down in MD and PA suggested a slight overperformer with respect to ptype.

Received 1.8" snow here overnight into this morning.  Came down pretty hard in the hour or two before 5am.  The 1.8" was measured at 5am, it has compacted down to about an inch as of 10am.  Total for the season here: 8.3".

Wow. Woke up to just shy of 5 inches of snow! I’m supposed to be grading finals all day but just got in from shoveling! Starting to turn to really heavy slush but was nice and light when I first got up. For all the people complaining about winter this far we are doing quite well. Ski areas are all open earlier than planned, lots of cold night cold nights and even some mild snow. Fingers crossed we stay in a similar pattern but turn snowier.

The ensembles have the northern stream low too far north into Cleveland. We need that low to track south closer to Cincinnati. The set up that worked for NYC back on 12-29-87 with 2.6” in NYC had this type of track. The common theme in recent years has been too dominant a northern stream. It would be nice if we could change that up some time soon.

 

 

NS-dominant patterns can work under some conditions, but not these.  I wish I could get as excited about this setup as some seem to be.  But, from what I see, this isn’t likely to deliver (let alone boost us over that magic 3” December threshold).
