wokeupthisam
I just had to laugh and grab a screenshot when I saw this. They should have retitled it, instead of "GFS Total Snowfall" it should say, "You want a Jester January in NE? I'll GIVE YOU a Jester January..."

Layman
With so much angst, hand wringing and consternation about the weather, I thought I'd try to chime in with what I believe is helpful advice. While some folks like warmth, others snow, many enjoy active patterns, etc it all boils down to perspective. We can all choose to perceive the same information or data in either a positive or negative way. Here's a good example from my household that may help to shine a light on this better: Negative Approach: Wife says: "Please come upstairs and meet me in the bathroom." My response: "Ugh. Alright....I'll be there in a minute." Positive Approach: Wife says: "Please cum upstairs and meat me in the bathroom." My response: "Absolutely!!!!" There are subtle differences, sometimes only discernible to the keen observer, but certainly meaningful nonetheless. I've found it's always best to take the positive approach Good luck out there, I hope this helps. 3

Layman
@tamarack @dendrite Gentlemen, you two seem to know your trees. I’ve got this on my property - what is it and what’s happening to it? I don’t believe it’s dead as I believe it had leaves that dropped in the Fall, but it appears to have shed its entire outer layer of bark across each tree. Looks like white ash infested with emerald ash beetle, with woodpeckers dining on some of the larvae, causing the "blonding" that can be the first sign of the insects' presence.

We've got woodpeckers galore here so I can definitely see that. Is there anything that can be done do stave off the emerald ash beetle if that is the cause? Thank you for the feedback and insight, I appreciate it!

I was going to say that it looks like white ash, but wanted to wait to see @tamaracks answer in case I was wrong. those trees are toast. you will see some leaves next year, but will be mostly bare. Cut them down before they become a hazard. I had a dead one standing in my woods for the last couple of years, it finally came down in the wind the other day. the only way to stave off the ash borer beetle is preventative treatment before they invade. you are several years too late.

Our town has a program to remove them from town land/ROWs. They took a big one down that was on the property line between my house and the town park next door because it could have posed a danger to my house. Made one call and they were out the next week. I don't even think they checked the property line. No charge to me.
weatherwiz
While I have this on my mind... @OceanStWx what is the point of this accumulated Supercell composite parameter energy Index I saw floating around last spring/summer?
tamarack
Caught early, at the first small sign of blonding, some trees can be saved through injection of a systemic pesticide. It's costly, so only appropriate for highly valued specimen trees. A huge old ash in the town park might be an example. The trees in your pic are, unfortunately, far beyond saving.

I have two dead ones standing and took 7-8 down within the last few years and burned them in my wood stove. I'd like to take the last two down for firewood, but my left shoulder is messed up and I need a shoulder replacement.

After my first shoulder injury (1998) the ortho doc told me that the shoulder is the most complex (and troublesome) joint on the body. Both of mine are functional but weakened; when I was a freshman in college, I tossed a baseball 270 feet. It's doubtful I could reach 70 today, even throwing downwind. However, both knees are bone-on-bone, and the left one is far worse than the right. This coming Tuesday I meet with the ortho team in town to discuss possible replacement. As a long-time co-worker said years ago, "Getting old isn't for sissies."

I can live with my shoulder the way it is, even golf but I lost 50 yards on my drive so it's kind of frustrating. I heard shoulder replacement is painful, my cousin just had it done so I'm in no rush to get it done. Hips are a piece of cake, but the knee is a more complex joint so takes more time to recover. My father had both knees done and both hips.

My father had both knees done and both hips. In 1996 my wife had surgery for a rotator tear and joint impingement that required shaving some bone. Pain management was awful and she was in agony for most of a week. About 5 years later she slipped on ice at the L.L. Bean store in Freeport, ramming that shoulder into a parking barrier. Same surgeon "cleaned up the mess" (his term) and a pain pump was installed - tiny capillary tube that administered pain med 2 mm/hour for 2 days. It was a world of difference, hardly any pain at all. (Soon after, they had to stop that practice as the teeny nozzles popped off a couple times and had to be fished out thru another surgery. Maybe they've fixed that problem?)
