ATVs, chainsaws, trailers. Maintenance and repair is painful in this weather. Most tasks require that you remove your gloves.

90 is much better than this. I get those working outside don't like it but at least there are measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of heat related illness. But even when its hot, you can still be outside...you can find shade if needed, drink plenty of water, hit up the beach. There is nothing you can do in this type of cold...even if you dress in 50 layers...what can you possible do outside? Not too mention you have to put on 50 layers just to go outside for 5 seconds then the second you get inside establishments you die because the heat is cranked.

When I was chasing skidders in the Allagash-St. John country 45 years ago, the smart skidder drivers would have a 100-lb propane tank keeping the machines 'startable'.  One fellow without such equipment built a fire under the oil pan one -30° morning.  It finally worked (I think- didn't stand around waiting) but it created frost nearly an inch thick on the upper part of the engine.

Out doing some last minute shopping. Was at the local mom and pop convenience store and talking to the owner. 
she lived in the extreme northern part of NH for a while (her husband was from there). She saw -64F on her kitchen thermo once.  Routinely got to -30 to -40F.   Older lady.  Mid 70s or so.

Yeah, I'd sell that too, -50°F on 01/16/09 at Big Black River in Maine was the coldest temp ever recorded here.

Ya that might be little too cold imo.  I know Van Buren, ME has had -50f in the early 2000’s I believe. But that’s an ice box up there.  I’ve seen -35 on my truck a few times being up there…And it’s brutal. Truck/machinery start making sounds you’ve never heard before. 
 

Edit:  maybe that’s where it was Big Black River, ME.  Thanks Jeff. But Van Buren is a pit too.

Van Buren used to hold the old coop record before all of those automated river HADS sites got put in. Non-MWN NH record is -46°F at Pittsburg. I don’t think anyone in NNE has theoretically gotten much colder than -50°F in the last 150 years so toss that -64°F further than DAW.

She's definitely mistaken.  Wasn't the kitchen thermometer - it was outside on the way home from school, trudging uphill all the way back.

I definitely question some old home thermometer readings I’ve seen in literature.  
Like Gardner MA readings of -50 from back in the 1930s or 1940s.  
 

I get cc and all but I’ve never seen colder than -19 in my rad area in 25+ years.

But what can really go wrong with a mercury thermometer? If anything I feel the Mercury gets stuck and it reads too high.
