Winter 24/25 Observations

It seems like we have had snow in the air for several days.  Last night, we still had snow on our mulch from Sunday morning.  It wouldn't have taken a long to drive from Bristol yesterday to find snow completely covering the ground in the foothills.  This type of stuff is what "could" follow the storm Friday/Saturday, i.e. lots of small events.  If we get snow Fri/Sat, it may be very difficult to get schools back in session for a while.  Keep in mind that most systems in E TN are almost out of days due to Helene.  Nobody banked hurricane days!

Earlier, I took a predawn jebwalk to appreciate the snowfall and wake myself up. The atmosphere was surreal. Like the rest of yall in the eastern valley we've been seeing on and off light snow showers since the system passed through a couple days ago. It's refreshing to see persistent fields of white with how last winter played out. 8RC3boG.jpegJtCDvD1.jpeg

We’ve had flurries and snow showers all morning here in Morristown, but not really any accumulation to speak of. I had to go to Newport earlier, and it was good timing, bc I noticed early this morning that the band that sometimes sets up at the I40-I81 split had set up. It was a bit more east on 40 than I expected, but at the Cocke Jefferson Co line, they had at least 1/2-1in in spots and it was coming down! Big flakes, even trying to accumulate on the interstate in spots and the side roads were white. Unfortunately it didn’t continue on into the city of Newport, but even there they had a heavy dusting.

Been snowing here pretty much all day - mood flakes.  Have a feeling this is just the beginning of winter.

Yes I thought the same thing. It’s pretty much been that way here too and these are big flakes. Usually when moisture is limited, the flake size is not good, but we’ve had more nickel and even quarter sized flakes at times than I would have thought. The problem is it just doesn’t last long enough. Todays high has been 27 here after 17 this morning.

Heading home, several areas with quarters falling through town but they were small areas. Maybe 2500 feet of big flakes and flurries on the other side.

A little evaporation but no melting here. High was 25. It's been in the 20s for about 54 hours now and may not get out of them before early next week.

It has been a decade since I have witnessed such continuous snowfall in Winter. If flurries persist into tomorrow afternoon there will not have been a clear day between the storm on the 5th and the upcoming one on the 10th. There is no rationale but the conditions feel perfect for a big one. The ground is in prime condition with primary roads intermittently turning white within moments of a modest snow shower passing.
