Big time drifting. Out there.  Will never know how much snow falls.  But there is at least 2 feet out in that field.  I was up to my waist in drifts earlier.  Some spots are almost scoured bare by the wind.

What's your elevation? This is why I laugh at you when you whine all summer about missing thunderstorms lol. It's 40 and raining where I live lol

Took a little drive around the area on my way to picking up the kids from school.  Other than that storm in Dec 2020, this was the next biggest difference based on elevation.  As I drove around between about 700-1100 feet there were huge differences.  Above 1000 feet is 3"+ with snow even sticking to the roads some...between 800-1000 feet is 1-2" and below 800ft near lineboro there was almost nothing on the ground and it was 35 and mixing with rain.  Just going up and down 100 feet on the hills you could see a difference around the area.  Most snow I saw was my house here on top of Dug Hill and the Parrs ridgeline along York St north of Manchester.  

We live on a hill just northwest of lineboro and have about 4 inches here also. The change with elevation is really big with this storm, I could see a huge difference on the ride home from work just as you describe.

They definitely did, still are. I was in Ft Richie/Pen Mar at about 5PM and they had 4”+ without being on the highest tops. Cascade down through the ridges near Wolfsville are still getting some good stuff, bet there’s several 6+ out there.

Took 5 hours to drive out here - white knuckle driving on 68 and secondary roads especially with the SN and blowing snow.

29.8 with SN.

First deck pic of the season! don’t mind the deck furniture still out - was supposed to put that away last weekend but we wound up staying in VA…

Timberline fired up last night too. Couple of warm days early in the week but I bet they open black Friday. For at least weekends.

Really hoping for more snow next weekend!

FWIW when I did my analysis of how predictive early snow was for a season….the best time to get a first snow up here was late November and the best amount was between 3-5”

I hiked between 1 and 4pm and it was pouring snow the whole time, only difference is that at the lower elevations it didn't stick. First picture is around 800ish feet, second is 1100 feet and the third is 1600ft, very clear example of how important temps are in marginal situations.

Yea those roads can be dicey. Even when I had my jeep with all-terrains, I wasn’t always comfortable driving through there…especially when it gets foggy.

One of my best friends has a winter cabin in Vermont and unless you want to add 30 miles you have to take a dirt road. Last winter I made the mistake of trying it in about 6” of snow. I made it. But I’ll just add the extra 30 miles next time.

Yeah, I’d guess they’re still 2 or so weeks away, need some consistent cold nights and no big rain storm cutters. 
 

Gusty winds and SN with dendrites mixed into smaller flakes.

Wound up with 3" way down here in SWVA near Cumberland gap. Late November Snow usually a good indicator for Winterhere as well .  Nice Pics !

This is why I'm glad I'm not responsible for measuring snow up here.  Impossible with the wind (and typically fluffy snow}

Although its now turning into a wet windblown snow, which is unusual.

It honestly was shocking but really hammered home what posters like PSU have said about how important surface level temps are in marginal storms. The parking lot was 33 degrees which just wasn’t cold enough compared to even 500ft higher where it had to be comfortably below freezing. Sad to think about what this may mean for our snowfall in future marginal cases but can see why PSU (and others, he just articulates it well) gets so irritated by the storms that could’ve been if it wasn’t 1-2 degrees too warm now.

We are at the cabin! Most harrowing part of the journey was driving on highways 42 and 55 in nighttime whiteout conditions with snow-covered roads. Once I got off road and engaged the diff locks we were good with the snow.

Snowing pretty hard up here and obv very windy. We have about 8" on the ground right now so far. I don't have any lights other than headlamps so we'll survey things and report back in the morning at daylight. Plan on going snowshoeing after breakfast.

Had 0.1” in Blacksburg yesterday, and it’s been flurrying off/on all day, now with some mixed stuff. 
 

Visited a mountaintop to get some true snow squall snow and probably got 0.5” there in a short time, but it was blown away by the wind.
