Pretty much all leaves are down here and I’ve done a few big pickups, so not a huge deal. I’ll probably do one final mulching mow after getting back from Thanksgiving and call it a season!

Just an FYI, if you chase to snowshoe WV you really have to stay at the top of the mountain (where the resort actually is anyways) to get the best snow in marginal situations.  There are some lodges and motels at the bottom but they often get drastically less snow in these situations.  I've even seen situations where the resort at the top gets 12"+ and there is nothing at the bottom.  

 

If you are looking for an area that is more uniform wrt snowfall across the area the Canaan Valley up to Davis area gets pretty good snow across the area and it's more uniform since there is a plateau across that area with relatively high elevations.  But the top of snowshoe could very well get the most of anywhere in these type of setups.

There appears to be several air bnbs available this weekend for around a hundred dollars a night in both Davis and Thomas.  If you go to the valley its much more expensive.  I recommend staying in one of the towns for events like these, the roads are cleared more and you can walk to restaurants/bars/shops and get a feel for the area.   Snowshoe would be good, too, they'll probably get a smidge more snow this go around, but the drive there is substantially further for most people.

Wish I could make it out this go but seems like to get the full event you’d have to leave tonight - showing up Friday afternoon might mean it’s all over. Don’t know about all of you, but Jebwalking in actively falling snow is the highlight.

I’ll see if I can get some pity flakes on Friday!

Thanks for this - I looked before booking and this condo is at 4,638 feet with (supposedly) a decent view. I'm hoping the only view I see is a blur of swirling snow pasting the window

12z GFS is interesting for Friday. Just need to get the precip cranking… temps are fine everywhere but the surface so it would fall as snow.

Good 12z suite for first flakes for many in central/northern MD and NoVA and slushy accumulations for favored cold spots. Positive change seems to be due to the low being farther southwest and closer to us. Hence more directly in the cold core of the low with heavier precipitation. Also helps that precipitation comes in right around 12-14z when temps are coldest.

According to the GFS/ECMWF, your backyard  at 2500 ft. will probably get a foot. 

At Snowshoe, the elevation will likely create whiteout conditions with wind, fog and blinding snow.

Mount Storm is only 3hrs 6mins from my house near Annopoils. The Shoe is over 5. My little shed on the mountain is 77 bucks a night. I think it has electricity, whatever. I'm not there for electricity. I might make it my little getaway cabin all winter.

Going to 'shoe might be a bit of overkill, but I've always wanted to go there and am a little worried about temps. Might be worrying over nothing but last two years living here taught me otherwise when it is a marginal setup. I had a blast last winter when I chased that big Sierra storm so this will produce some of the same conditions - but on a serious diet by comparison.

I'm considering a drive up Saturday evening after work.  Is Stumptown open until 10?

I'm looking forward to my ground turning white (T) while 10 miles N and W has 6 inches on the ground and Snowshoe has 10-15. That is the way it rolls in this type of event.

...Rapid Onset of Strong Winds Later This Evening...

A rapid onset of strong west to northwest winds will develop
between 8 and 11 PM this evening behind a strong cold front. Wind
gusts around 35 to 45 mph are most likely with a few gusts around
50 mph possible. The strong winds will be capable of blowing
around unsecured objects and isolated instances of wind damage
are possible as well. Winds will gradually diminish overnight.
