Many springs here dried up this summer including the one that provides water to my house. Fortunately I am able to haul water here weekly from a flowing nearby spring. Farmers here say drought here is hard to break without snowfall so this could be a sign of things to come. My heart goes out to you!! We had serious drought in Augusta earlier but recent rains have helped.

That was Christmas 2022 and I think we were -20F in the tent with wind hills of -43F at one point. This probably won't be quite that epic, plus our A-frame is framed up and insulated, though we only have electric to the meter so I'm just gonna bring an electric space heater to plug in. Thankfully no tents this time.
nj2va
Unfortunately, still working at this hour but took a break and just checked 18z GFS: 12-20" for the mountains...Snowshoe is going to do really well.

Couple of thoughts. I am thinking of coming out for this one. Haven't been out since the MLK bomb to upslope event a few years ago (was awesome). Where's the best place for this one? Canaan, Snowshoe? I obviously did the last one in Garrett not far from you. The Raley properties are just so easy to book and quality places to visit (expensive yes, but the juice meets the squeeze). Do Snowshoe or Canaan have a similar property management group with places akin to those? Also, re: chains for the car. I know they can be beneficial with snow covered roads out that way. We drive a Lincoln Aviator SUV, pretty decent in the snow, but recommendations on chains if we started to do more of these journeys?

I've got a 4wd Tacoma with some weight in the back. I've got a cabin for less then 100$ a night. I'm thinking about extending my stay and heading there Friday if I can get the place. This place is right on the western slopes of the Allegheny Front Range. Perfect location for upslope enhancement. Cloudy and 52

I doubt chains are necessary if you're staying on maintained paved roads but they're relatively cheap and never hurt to have in the back of the car. The only reason I picked mine up is that we have about a mile drive up the side of Meadow Mountain to get access up to our property on the ridge and none of it is maintained. So I want to make sure I can get up to the ridge in the dark Friday night (3k ft elevation). And then back down if necessary on Sunday in a foot+ snow. I got mine from tirechain.com. Prices are reasonable and shipping overnight is fast.

We just started the A-frame this summer so this is actually the first trip out there without a tent. Gonna be nice. No kids, just my wife and she knows what she signed up for, and generally gets excited for camping stuff as well.

I live in the area and have found that a community called Old Timberline in the Canaan Valley (close to Davis, WV) is the best when it comes to events like these. But, you wouldn't go wrong in Snowshoe either. I found one house available in Old Timberline on Airbnb although they are a bit pricey (everything in Davis is pricey though). At least the sun is useless this time of year so the marginal temps won't immediately turn any accumulation into a slushee (if we can get past the warm ground).

I'm interested in what you think is pricey. We are wavering in going since we can't leave until Friday and will be back up there Tues night. Kmlwx Posted yesterday at 01:35 AM Share Posted yesterday at 01:35 AM Significant power blips in Colesville, MD. Generator has kicked on and off three times now. The blips are long enough to trigger it but it's happened quite a few times now. May just cut the house over to generator power until the weather passes to keep it from flipping back and forth.
