Shack
Insult to injury for the folks on central-west coast. Target shifting south since yesterday. GFS showing a metro Tampa hit. Euro 50 miles south. Had a rental at Anna Maria booked for the family arriving Thursday, October 17th. The rental company finally cancelled three days ago. So, they fared much better and it looked not-so-bad at Sanibel, so we were looking on Friday at rentals there for the same period. Tropics say, "No, Sir. I told you, you are not getting a beach visit this year." A little pathetic to complain, though, about my interrupted vacation when so many of our AmWx friends are still without power. WolfStock1
Ugh. One of the things I wish that they showed on the graphic is - what is the expected level of the storm when it makes landfall. kayman
SPC AC 071915 Day 3 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0215 PM CDT Mon Oct 07 2024 Valid 091200Z - 101200Z ...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN FLORIDA PENINSULA AND THE FLORIDA KEYS... ...SUMMARY... A few tornadoes are possible across the Florida Peninsula and Florida Keys as Hurricane Milton moves through on Wednesday. ...Florida... Major Hurricane Milton is forecast by the National Hurricane Center to make landfall along the west coast of Florida Wednesday evening, before moving offshore the east coast of Florida by early Thursday morning. Intense low to midlevel flow associated with the hurricane will overspread much of the Florida Peninsula and the Keys as the system tracks northeast through the period. Forecast soundings indicated enlarged low-level hodographs and SRH increasing to greater than 300 m2/s2 within the eastern semicircle of Milton. Mid-70s F dewpoints will provide sufficient low-level instability, and a risk for a few tornadoes will accompany convection within the rainbands of Milton. ..Leitman.. 10/07/2024
kayman
Milton is definitely starting to amp up the tornado threat: Mesoscale Discussion 2133 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0723 PM CDT Tue Oct 08 2024 Areas affected...southwestern coastal Florida and the lower Keys Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 090023Z - 090530Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...Supercell development posing risk for waterspouts/tornadoes is possible offshore of southwestern Florida coastal areas and north of the lower Keys much of tonight. It appears that this may not spread into coastal areas and inland until closer to or beyond daybreak. However, trends are being closely monitored. DISCUSSION...A weak/diffuse surface frontal zone in advance of Hurricane Milton has been a focus for persistent discrete rotating storms the past several hours, roughly 50-150+ miles north-northwest through west of the Key West vicinity. This activity has likely been supported by forcing for ascent associated with weak low-level warm advection and moderate to strong southwesterly deep-layer shear. Low-level hodographs are likely rather modest to weak, but clockwise curved, and in the presence of seasonably high boundary-layer moisture content this probably has been sufficient to support low-level mesocyclones occasionally producing waterspouts. Through late evening and into the overnight hours, as Milton slowly accelerates northeastward across the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, the developing warm frontal zone probably will begin to surge northward to its immediate north and northeast. However, closer to southwestern Florida Peninsula coastal areas, the Rapid Refresh suggests that the boundary may remain quasi-stationary into early portions of the overnight hours, and may not begin approaching the Naples/Fort Myers vicinities until 09-12Z. Even at that time, low-level hodographs may only just be in the process of modest enlargement, as flow around 850 mb becomes southeasterly and begins to increase in excess of 30 kt. And, based on forecast soundings, appreciable boundary-layer destabilization may not develop inland of coastal areas until after daybreak. ..Kerr/Edwards.. 10/09/2024 The Key West NWS radar is picking up several rotating thunderstorms over the open waters moving north towards Naples and Fort Myers

kayman
One of many confirmed tornadoes in the isolated supercells ahead of Milton's main rain shield: Quote Tornado Warning issued October 9 at 11:10AM EDT until October 9 at 11:30AM EDT by NWS Miami FL At 1110 AM EDT, a confirmed large and dangerous tornado was located near Clewiston, moving north at 30 mph. Valid 091419Z - 091545Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 690 continues. SUMMARY...Potential for tornadoes will continue late this morning into the afternoon. The threat will gradually expand northward as heating destabilizes the boundary layer. Wind fields will also increasingly support tornadoes with time. DISCUSSION...Low-level rotation has been increasing in two supercell storms south of Lake Okeechobee. One storm produced a tornado in Collier County just before moving into Hendry County. More recently, the storm in central Broward County produced a tornado as well. Storms earlier this morning generally began to weaken near Lake Okeechobee, but temperatures have been increasing with surface heating. That being said, the tornado threat will likely begin to extend farther north over the next few hours. Additional updrafts in eastern Collier County have also been slowly deepening over the last hour. This activity could intensify and similarly be capable of producing a tornado. Potential for tornadoes, including a strong tornado, should continue to increase as stronger low-level flow across the peninsula expands as Milton moves eastward and its wind field concurrently expands. ..Wendt.. 10/09/2024
kayman
The tornado threat associated with the main rainshield is starting to ramp up as well in Southwestern Florida. There is a huge Special Marine Warning that is strongly worded with a threat of multiple strong tornadic waterspouts that are associated with the outer rain bands coming in from Punta Gorda to Marco Island. Mesoscale Discussion 2137 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1012 AM CDT Wed Oct 09 2024 Areas affected...Southwestern Florida Concerning...Tornado Watch 690... Valid 091512Z - 091645Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 690 continues. SUMMARY...The tornado threat will increase along the southwest Florida coast vicinity in the next 1-2 hours. DISCUSSION...The next outer convective band of Milton is set to move ashore along the southwestern coast of Florida in the next 1-2 hours. Wind fields this far west are stronger than farther east as evident in the KTBW VAD data. The potential for more discrete storms will be maximized on the southern portions of the convective band. Even with more storm interaction potential farther north, very large low-level SRH will still promote a risk for tornadoes. A strong tornado is possible particularly where storms will have better access to more buoyant inflow in the southern portions of the convective band. ..Wendt.. 10/09/2024
