I am sure I speak for every red tag on this subforum, we are all so upset about what has happened today. This is going to have a very long lasting impact on this country almost immediately. I feel for anyone who got needlessly fired today.

Horrible day and the worst is still yet to come. For those of us in the thick of it, we need the support of everyone who appreciates what we do. Contact your Congressional representatives. The staffing shortages caused by the fork and now the probationary employee firings have us on defcon 2 level in terms of how bad it is.

The goals of the people staffing this admin will get us to defcon one and beyond. I've been in the NWS since 2009 and I fear for my job at this point. They're demanding RIFs (reductions in force plans) by March 13th. This stuff technically is illegal and could be stopped by Congress if GOP Senators and Reps muster up the will to stand up to this for once.

Not very optimistic about it, but maybe understanding that offices in their states or districts would have to close and services degraded, and the flood of complaints from constituents can make a difference.

At this point as far as I heard 289 of 2500ish NWS employees were let go, you already reduced things by 12.5% another RIF and you will have NWS offices that won't be able to stay open. This is not including the other cuts to NOAA outside of the NWS. It is maddening, frustrating, and sad all at once. Like you I started here at KDTW in 2009 with contract weather observations and I am worried that I am going to get a call or an email that we have to shut down, I have 5 other employees I manage, what in the hell am I going to tell them if that happens. "Sorry your dream job got eliminated because of a whim of a couple of assholes"

I'm truly sorry for what you and NOAA is going through. What that'll mean moving forward is catastrophic, and the administration could care less. We will all be less prepared for the disasters we face and of course in the aftermath we now know we're on our own.

Unfortunately, the GOP reps and senators are afraid of the MAGA crowds they have lied to for years, the same people they used for votes are threatening them. Even if they had a shred of decency, they're cornered by extremists.

So sadly I see this playing out until at least midterms.

I agree that there's outright fear among non hardcore MAGAs in the GOP. I think that's a big driver in the rubber stamping of unqualified nominees to Cabinet positions and the silence on the monstrosity of DOGE.

But they're gonna be getting more and more anger from constituents considering the high approval ratings of NOAA/NWS and other agencies. Ultimately, all we need is a few to be unexpectedly brave given the small margins, and it gives me a small sliver of hope.

That said, you're absolutely right the people in this administration could care less - they're carrying out the Project 2025 playbook that Trump laughably disavowed. So if we don't get a few GOP reps to flip, things will continue to get worse and even those of us in the agency for 10+ years are probably in jeopardy of being laid off.

I go to DC annually to visit privately with most of the IL congresspeople, I’ll be in DC in two weeks and am going to hammer them on NOAA/NWS. Like him or hate him Rep Bill Foster has built his brand on being the pro science voice of Congress, going to be particularly interested to hear his take.

And now, they froze our GSA credit cards. I will say, the commitment to the bit of hurting fellow Americans at all costs by any means is quite something. The level of brainwashedness to be able to hate a group of actually hard working people in the federal govt that don't apply politics to the jobs we do has to be unprecedented in modern history.

Awesome to hear this is a top 5 winter for you!!  This has been a good winter for me.  Snow cover has been good but nothing amazing.  Snowfall for me has been average.  I also have done very well with LES.  Ski conditions have been very good.  Sledding is good.  Lake ice has been wonderful.

I have hope for more to come but know March is a variable for winter (MJO is in the cold phases currently).  I know the peps to west and south of MI of us are ready to be done (extremely understandably so).  I am not ready to wave the flag just yet

Shows he has not been active since September. While Im sure he has had plenty of snow, his region of the UP is actually in a pocket of below avg snowfall, with the much heavier totals being to their west (Keewenaw) and east (Sault Ste Marie).
