While we wait for the recon flight results, does anyone know what these other, presumably commercial, airline flights are doing flying not far from the edge of Milton?  Is that normal pilot behavior?

once you get 80 miles from the center there's not much action-it's a small compact storm.

Yes. Outside convection there is little turbulence. Makes sense because you’d expect low shear there. There could be transverse banding causing issues, but what you see there is not uncommon.

With a 70knot wind…. They missed the center

I dont know if they missed it as much as the center was in between data readings because the eye is so small... waiting for that dropsonde

Airliners are flying at 37,000 feet, well above the storm that far from the center.

From the plan of the day, it appears they Skip Navigation Linksplan to launch 2 unmanned ac systems into the eye. One at 925Z on the 8th, one at 2115Z on the 8th:

SOUTHWARD TO APPROXIMATELY 25.0N 81.9W AND THEN NORTHWARD,

          ENDING AT APPROXIMATELY 07/2100Z NEAR 27.8N 83.5W.

       B. DURING THE NOAA 43 MISSION TASKED IN TCPOD 24-128 FOR THE

08/1200Z SYNOPTIC TIME, ONE SMALL UAS IS PLANNED FOR

RELEASE AT IN THE CENTER OF MILTON AT APPROXIMATELY

08/0925Z. IT WILL OPERATE AT OR BELOW 5,000 FT FOR

          ABOUT 1 TO 1.5 HOURS.
