While we wait for the recon flight results, does anyone know what these other, presumably commercial, airline flights are doing flying not far from the edge of Milton?  Is that normal pilot behavior?

Rita was 895mb in the Gulf and is currently the strongest recorded for that area

once you get 80 miles from the center there's not much action-it's a small compact storm.

Yes. Outside convection there is little turbulence. Makes sense because you’d expect low shear there. There could be transverse banding causing issues, but what you see there is not uncommon.

This is beyond comprehension with satellite and now numbers coming back from the aircraft. Unreal!

I dont know if they missed it as much as the center was in between data readings because the eye is so small... waiting for that dropsonde

It’s not going to hit Florida at this intensity…so that needs to be kept in mind.

Airliners are flying at 37,000 feet, well above the storm that far from the center.

There’s reason to believe it was even lower at peak given the recon left before the “best” satellite images. we’re blessed here to have them in at the peak times.
