Every year they make a big deal out of the best conditions for the best color, and while some years are more brilliant (or longer) than others, I've never seen a color show disappoint. Simply does not happen in the upper midwest/Great Lakes/northeast with our variety of trees/colors.

I feel so validated by all of this talk because the last week or so, whenever I take my dog for a walk in the forest preserve by my house, it smells overwhelmingly of ladybug, and I thought I was just losing it. I imagine there's probably just a big gathering somewhere close to the entrance that I haven't discovered

I’ll note, the large Swamp White Oak outside our house went from mostly green to post peak in 4 days. Yesterday it was peak color and today brown and dropping leaves. Trees aren’t holding the color as long this year and dropping leaves rather quickly.

I don't know. Looks like a perfect image to me. Shows the brown in exquisite form and sharpness with some color in the background for even more contrast. It tells the story you are telling in a very clear manner.

Appreciate the kind words. I hold myself to the same standard as others in this subforum especially @michsnowfreak so my crappy iPhone 8 pics aren’t up to snuff.

Another dry frontal passage this evening. Gusty NW winds and rapidly falling temperatures. Back to autumn.

Just keep getting spits of rain. Other than a week ago when I saw not quite a 1/2", this Fall has been very dry. Only 0.62" since Sept 1. Temps running seasonable to mild. Need some good winds to knock off the dying leaves. High school football playoffs underway this week. Two Harbors played well this year (7-1). They got a 1st round bye at 2nd seed. They play this Sat. My grandson has done well this year. Hopefully they will make it to state, but that's a tough climb. He did go to state in track earlier this year, tho. :)

I've noticed there is this weird bug like a small black fruit fly that will land on your wrists/hands and bite, leaving a small welt. Never seen them before. The bugs are bad with the fantastic heat we've had.

Love the older trees along the streets. We have many here in TH like that, too, except they have been redoing the sewer lines, and streets every year for the past few years. In doing so, they cut down the old trees, and it just makes it so open, and I don't care for that. It'll be decades for many of our streets to look like that again. Back in the 70's/80's when Dutch Elm disease hit, and they all had to be cut down, it was the same way. Thankfully, many maples were in the mix, so it wasn't as bad.

The NWS forecast said 38º this morning.  I put my flower pots in the garage just to be safe.  It was already 36º at bedtime and I woke up to 31º.

Tonight is our first chance of good rain in two months.  However, how much we'll get remains a mystery.  Models are all over the place... from barely anything at all to 1.5".  It's possible all the rain misses east and south.

Right at peak fall foliage color across the area right now.

If not for the drought, it's quite possible that peak conditions may have not been until early November. The consistently mild temps did a great job at offsetting drought effects, allowing the peak as late as we're seeing now.

I'm the same way! They did that last year here with sewer lines, cutting down some big trees then replacing them with new small trees when the project was done. I HATE when they cut down old trees! Fortunately still lots of tree lined streets here. But the ones with less trees are simply missing something imo. It's not the same.
