I have to say if it's not been stated but the models did one hell of a job at a long lead time also. The globals basically nailed this a week out. That's really when Cantons Mayor Zeb Smathers started preparing for the storm.

They globals did great with it. The ICON actually had the best track from days out.

I was looking back at some of the wind damage from this storm and man. It was such an unusual setup from that standpoint.
To have hurricane force gusts region wide in western NC from a gulf storm is something I still can’t wrap my brain around 3 weeks later.

People really don't know the half of it because the news isn't covering the super bad stuff. Bodies are still being dug out of the ruble...

And yet the death count isn't moving much.

I feel bad all those trees got knocked down, but some areas of the country we dont get fall leaf change. I cried like a chump in 2019, but after a while I just got on with life. It isnt everything. But I do feel really bad for West North Carolina. It's getting cold up there already and those people need relief!

The Charleston P&C has done an excellent job covering Helene. This is an example. “I've covered disasters around the world. After Helene ripped through the NC mountains, I went home.” https://www.postandcourier.com/news/helene-north-carolina-damage-first-person/article_0b2d62ac-89a2-11ef-a67d-5f340e06930a.html
