Major Hurricane Helene

This is reminding me a little of Opal from 1995.

I remember waking up Thursday morning in Atlanta and it was really difficult to get anywhere as there was so many trees down (which then took out power, which took out traffic lights).

I believe Opal was also a very fast moving storm, though I think it may have actually been just on the west side of Atlanta, so that was likely worse than what Helene seems to be setting up for.

Keeping all the mountain folks in my thoughts as you'll look like are going to get hit so hard tomorrow.

Went by to look at the Pigeon river.  Being in a drought here has helped but the river has risen several feet already.  If we get an additional 6 inches we are screwed here in Haywood and that looks likely currently.  All stay safe out there.

I’ve been thinking how lucky we are that it has been so low, also lucked out we didn’t have the same training of the truly heavy stuff yesterday like those to our East had to deal with. That said, I’m getting more and more concerned about wind again.  Saw the Pigeon is forecast to peak at 19 ft in Canton, so a little less than Fred but still flooding almost as bad.

Hwy 106 between Dillard and Highlands is about to washout

If that's the road I'm thinking of, it's dicey in the best of circumstances. Couldn't pay me enough to travel on it now.

(I used to co-own some property in Highlands so I'm a bit familiar with the area.)
