Been doing this weather thing for over 50 years and I've seen a lot of changes and improvement in technology during those years. In my experience, big time weather events/patterns are known in advance, some with a significant lead time. Big Arctic Outbreaks I've seen have had a week to 10 day period of hints in the guidance, mainly the ensembles of the reliable globals. Throw in all of the teleconnection indices pointing to a favorable possibility, I believe we may well be headed to an active and memorable time period beginning January 1st with the initial cold front stepping down with each of the flowing fronts. This may be one of the more prolonged periods for winter weather not seen in a number of years. Some the analogs are certainly pointing to that potential.

Meanwhile it's almost 70° here in the Valley and tornadoes are once again spinning up in the Houston metro area. Changes, they are comin...

With the rain moving out. Feels like the can start looking at our winter potential. The first shot looks to be new years morning with some nw flow snow along the border. Then cold and possible big dog potential comes. Lots of energy flying around so it’ll be hard to nail anything down at much lead time. I’ve got a feeling they’ll be a lo to track in the next few days. Better rest up.

Dang this is brutal. Our source region looks plenty cold.
An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for Umiat and the Western Arctic Plains until 10 PM tonight. Dangerously cold temperatures as low as -50 with wind chills as low as -75 are expected. Frostbite and hypothermia are likely if exposed to the temperatures. Make sure to wear the appropriate clothing if you plan to be outside. #akwxFB_IMG_1735516855928.jpg

OK I just have to ask. The warning says: An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for Umiat and the Western Arctic Plains until 10 PM tonight.

What will occur at 10:01 in the midst of what I assume is around 20+ hours of darkness that will allow the extreme cold warning to expire?

Good question. The warning says that temps will begin to moderate this evening, but their hourly forecast shows -30's for days.

When I read that I was thinking the same thing.  I'm like what the heck happens at 10 pm... It's just normal frozen Tundra  cold....

Better yet, WHO does it affect? And then I remembered an Outdoor Boys video where Luke camped in -50 degree temps so maybe it’s just issued for him.

A wholesome channel in a sea of bad content today. We love it at our house.

I always want more inland fishing videos from them but Luke has done an amazing job with their channel. Watching the snow camping/survival videos helps with the winter doldrums.

Not for me. I can’t get past the fact that an entire film crew, a few trucks, jeeps, and a bus are watching them risk their lives.

The posts in the main discussion thread are always greater when there is the perception that we are sucking. 18z made it pretty quiet, lol. Nothing has really changed except that the digital snow has increased again. It is still looking good for snow and cold for all the mountains I do believe.

There sure are a lot of memorable winter analogs showing up in today's updated CPC Day 8+ and Day 11+ Analogs.

Only a couple duds in there snow wise. 1997 and 12-28-2000 as that went on to January 01. 1-97 featured major cold and Snow over the Northern Plains and Midwest; a typical Nina Winter.
