Today will be our last above normal temperature day for quite a while. High temperatures will fall to the mid 40's tomorrow and then to the 30's by day and low 20's at night for much of the next week. Our only rain opportunity over the next week arrives by dawn tomorrow and should be exiting stage right by early afternoon. Last summer I was mapping out a trip to Ohsweken on the Six Nations of Ontario for a trip to their race track. It's on the other side of the lake and because of that, it would take four hours, 43 minutes from here. That lead me to thinking: How far is Toronto? I've been to the Falls. Trip took three and a half hours. Add an extra hour and 20 minutes for Toronto. Four hours, 58 minutes. Philadelphia? Three hours, 41 minutes. New York? Four hours, eight minutes. Detroit? Five hours, 22 minutes. So from where my tuchus currently resides, I am only one hour, and 17 minutes further from the largest city in Canada than I am from the largest city in the state I live. I know Columbia Gas has been doing it for some time, as has Philadelphia Gas Company. Now People's Gas is doing the same. It's called "weather normalization adjustment" and they tack it onto your gas bill. In theory, it's supposed to provide more standard billing and it's marketed as "revenue neutral." But I went back and looked at my bills back to 2002, and it looks like it's always additive - sometimes quite large. Even in December 2022, when there was a huge cold snap at Christmas, they still tacked on an extra charge. It doesn't even make sense. Supposedly, it'll charge you when less gas is being used due to warm weather. But I went back and compared and some months they said were warmer and I should have used less gas, I used the same or more gas. How am I being assessed a charge because their formula says I used less gas when I actually didn't use less gas? Doesn't make sense. Normally distributed data should have an equal amount above and below. Whatever they are claiming is normal weather is clearly bogus. Looks like a cash grab for the utilities. I see PGW used this scam in May 2022, yes, in May, to charge people huge sums for a month when nobody uses gas anyways. They ended up refunding it that time. Unreal. There's another lighthouse a little ways down the Isle from there that still gives tours. Climbing a lighthouse is one of the coolest, most terrifying things. Yes sir. That's what I took away from my first trip to Chicago...we were on the lakeshore and if I didn't know better I would have swore I was at the ocean. I had a chance to climb Cape Hatteras a few years ago and wasn't prepared to be overcome with exhaustion at the top. Didn't help that it was 89/77 the day we visited. As much as I love the ocean, the only thing Beach Six doesn't have that the southern coast does is palm trees. Erie in August is spectacular. The lake is warm from the summer, the lake cools the coastline so while it's 85, 90°F in Millcreek Township, it's 84°F with a gentle breeze on the Isle. I love jumping waves, but I can satiate that at Waldameer just off the Isle. Great wave pool. Lake Erie is basically a glaciated swimming pool with an incredible sunset. And it's just up the road. Presquile Isle is a beaut. I'd rent the cabin in Mercer county once again if I was in the chase. Bout 30 miles off the lake. I'll be at the my cabin and if service allows, will share what we get, as you know where i am, I'm in a favored spot for the NC snowbelt region. We NEVER get anything close those closer to the lakes, but I'm happy to see flakes flyin, and after looking at early nooners....we should have a few inches OTG by Friday AM arrival. Will have beer in hand while plowing w/ UTV. It's the little things in life that make me thankful. This is one of them for me. Love plowing snow. Enjoy your wintry retreat. Well stated friend. My brother, my son and several of his pals that call me POPS as they are all "my kids" will join us. Blessed and thankful is an understatement. My son just informed my wife and I that we are going to be grandparents for the first time. Last night my aged father called to tell me his time afield and at the cabin is done, and wants me to take his rifle... talk about resonate and life going full circle. I cant bring mysef to do it cause its the end of an era, and so many owe him their love of the mountains and being together. He was the glue that held it together for oh so long....now i carry the torch. Life's full of balance and oh so bittersweet. Be thankful all.
