yoda Posted August 9 Share Posted August 9 Updated tornado section from 944pm LWX AFD Tornadoes: The growing concern has certainly come to fruition as evidenced by the number of Tornado Warnings issued over the past 2 to 4 hours. A number of these cells have showed TDS signatures and occasional CC drops, all supportive of possible tornadoes. This concern persists through the overnight hours as well. Ample low-level shear, limited instability, and large cyclonically curved hodographs remain in the picture overnight. The area favorable for tornadoes will spread northward through the Shenandoah Valley and into the West Virginia Panhandle. SPC has highlighted these locations in a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms, driven by tornadoes. With the potential for most of this activity to occur well after dark, we encourage people to have a way to receive Tornado Warnings at night, and to be ready to take shelter in the middle of the night, if needed. If it scans large things (like debris, big or small, leaves, houses, whatever) it shows noticeably on radar. Having been a DC area lifer, rainfall busts on the eastern side of tropical systems don’t matter all that much. The most interesting effects still usually occur on the eastern side, or what others call the “dirty” side, regardless of rainfall totals. David 1979, Bob 1985, Fran 1996, Isabel 2003- those were all relatively lower precip events on the east side of the storm but had very consequential effects on that side. A SE wind will down so many more trees than a N or NE wind in our region. There was still quite a bit of rain from Isabel, enough to flood Dundalk. You're telling me that was the lesser precip side of the storm? Makes me wonder how bad it was out west.
