Boston Bulldog
With this incoming storm likely to drop 8-12" (and potentially more), it looks like woods skiing will be game on for northern VT on the first weekend of December. Very quietly the NNE mountain snowpack has gotten off to a great early start (what happened mid-december last year was criminal). Jay looks ready to drop ropes on everything, insane stuff up there. I keep thinking back to the sleeper powder day along the spine in late November last year, keep an eye out on this Friday.

It’s pretty nice out there. Another 6-12” would go a long way too. About a 10-12” net gain since Thanksgiving on about the same amount of reported snowfall.

powderfreak
Past two mornings the system has been maxed out. The snowmaking team has been dumping some serious frozen water on the hill. Just like QPF in a natural snowstorm, the goal is to have temperatures low enough to allow the system to max out its water equivalent side of the curve. Cold drastically lowers the compressed air side of the equation. Last night was 10F up top and 13F in the base. We always talk about 14F being the sweet spot. Snow piles up quickly at these temps when you are moving a lot of water.

Really impressive stuff out of Mount Mansfield. It wasn’t nearly as deep farther south at MRG, but still some great (albeit thin cover) powder in the upper elevations. Frozen mud on the pole tips means low tide! Not sure if the natural snow at Sugarbush would’ve held up on most trails for a busy weekend crowd.
Layman
With 2”+ of rain and temps in the high 50’s expected, as well as Uncle Phil’s pending visit this week, we made a quick run up to Loon today. Conditions were reasonable for early season. Busier than I thought it would be but apparently everyone had the same idea to beat the rain. Loon isn’t our favorite place to go, but it’s close enough to make a game-time decision like today.

I think most ski resorts survived fairly well considering the amount of rain. Lots of good snowmaking temps ahead, so barring a repeat of yesterday showing up, the holiday week should be vastly improved over last year.

mcglups
First day on the mountain at Wildcat and conditions were quite good. Upper mountain was packed powder, mid to lower mountain was similar but they had snow making in progress and that gets a bit wonky. Pleasantly surprised by overall conditions. Looks like they were blowing on Polecat (2.75 miles in length) so that might be open within a week or so. Wildcat is like stepping back into the 80's, and I think as I get older, that becomes even more OK with me!
mcglups
Day two on the mountain at Wildcat and conditions were really good. Entire mountain (one complete run from top to bottom) was packed powder. Snow making continues on Polecat and it is likely they will complete Upper Polecat before the rain visits on Tuesday. Reflection of the day is the low sun angle in December, I did my entire six pack of runs in the shade and only saw the sun when I got in my car to leave! powderfreak
There’s been some drama up in Randolph, NH on the Hill community. Crescent Ridge backcountry zone has been closed to all users this winter. A rapid-growth spot the past few years by touring skiers. There are two kinds of opinions on it… that it is too busy with traffic, cars parking on the road, it’s a safety issue if first responders can’t get through? Then another faction thinks it’s more of a NIMBY move. They moved to rural Randolph not to see cars go by all day.

I do know someone who lives very close to that trailhead and they have only on a few occasions all winter seen cars parking in the road. Yes, the lot isn't huge but certainly enough space for first responders to get through even when full. I haven't skied there in a few years but last time was on a powder Saturday and it wasn't any different from what any other trailhead in New England would look like. My guess is NIMBYism but you never know the whole story. Shame. Fun skiing and a sweet little snow belt. Hopefully it opens again soon!
