79 / 76 and cloudy with a strong SE wind and some areas of rain.   Debby and the remnants working through with the heaviest rains focused into PA with a line of storms and showers as the front clears through overnight.   A 5 -6 day dry out with pleasant summer weather near normal for this time of the season with trough and weakness into the EC and ridge out west.   Next weekend we watch the tropics in the Atlantic and other waves in the Caribbean and Gulf.   Heat cappes west till after mid month with a hotter last 1/3 of the month once any tropical systems work out.

Well done boys.  Darkstar - watch the movie.  It was the number 2 top grossing movie at the box office that year.  Number 1 was Star Wars.

Great. I'm trying to find a window to seed a new lawn in the backyard. Looks like I'll have to dodge washouts over the next several weeks.

Its's a bit early anyway.  Generally you want to wait until about Sept 1st give or take  for best germination of seed and less weeds

Yesterday’s high was today’s low, both 70 at midnight.

Sunny and windy with dews in the upper 70’s might be a combination I’ve never experienced until today.

Yeah, very rare to have wind gusts over 30 mph with dew points in the upper 70s.

One more day of tropical gunk brought north by Debby.

The ocean temps are about 5° to 10° cooler this summer due to the much stronger southerly flow.

Nah that's an old wives tale. People say that because cool season grass GROWS the best during cooler weather, but it germinates the best during warm weather. my neighbors used to tell me that all the time and my yard crushed theirs year-round. mid August is actually the best time to put seed down because it gives the grass enough time to mature and grow deep roots before the winter. It also gives you time to add additional seed if there is a washout from a big storm, which something like that usually happens. this will be my fourth complete renovation and I’ve learned that putting the seed down in August is best as long as you can keep it moist.

Completely agree.  Mid August works, especially if you are seeding with tall fescue.  It needs time to take and become well established before the cold weather and cold soil temps.  Perennial ryegrass you can wait a little later, but my suggestion is start mid to late August and keep the area watered especially if we get another heat wave.  I'm starting my big reno next weekend.  Peat moss on top will help retain moisture and hopefully aid in preventing a major washout.

Be careful out there with these winds. Unfortunately a tree fell outside my building in Astoria and trapped an elderly woman underneath. She was responsive but dazed and there was a lot of bleeding from the head. It seems as if the tree knocked her over and she hit her head on a wrought iron fence. Incredibly sad. Hoping for her speedy recovery in the hospital.

Historical:

1878 - The second most deadly tornado in New England history struck Wallingford CT killing 34 persons, injuring 100 others, and completely destroying thirty homes. The tornado started as a waterspout over a dam on the Quinnipiac River. It was 400 to 600 feet wide, and had a short path length of two miles. (The Weather Channel)

1969 - A tornado hit Cincinnati OH killing four persons and causing fifteen million dollars property damage. The tornado moved in a southeasterly direction at 40 to 50 mph. (The Weather Channel)

1987 - Florida baked in the summer heat. Nine cities reported record high temperatures for the date, including Jacksonville with a reading of 101 degrees. Miami FL reported a record high of 98 degrees. (The National Weather Summary)

1988 - Tropical Storm Beryl deluged Biloxi with 6.32 inches of rain in 24 hours, and in three days drenched Pascagoula MS with 15.85 inches of rain. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in the Southern Plains Region and over the Central High Plains Region. Thunderstorms in Oklahoma producedwind gusts to 92 mph at Harrah. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1989 - Evening thunderstorms in Arizona deluged Yuma with record torrential rains for the second time in two weeks. The rainfall total of 5.25 inches at the Yuma Quartermaster Depot established a state 24 hour record, and was nearly double the normal annual rainfall. Some of the homes were left with four feet of water in them. Seventy-six cities in the south central and eastern U.S. reported record low temperatures for the date. Lake Charles LA equalled their record for August with a low of 61 degrees. Canaan Valley WV was the cold spot in the nation with a low of 32 degrees. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1992 - A tornado packing winds estimated between 113 and 157 mph caused significant damage to the town of Chester, South Dakota. Shortly after 7 pm CDT a tornado tore right through the heart of Chester causing considerable damage. Four businesses were destroyed, three others had significant damage, and five had minor damage. An elevator and new grain bin were leveled, and another bin was heavily damaged. Most of the building housing the fire department was demolished. Also, many houses and vehicles sustained damage, and large trees were uprooted or broken off. In one instance a steel beam was thrust through a garage and into the car inside. One mile north of Chester, an entire house was moved off the foundation. The town had to be evacuated for 19 hours after the tornado because the tornado damaged a 12,000-gallon ammonia tank releasing 4,000 gallons of the liquid gas into the air. The ammonia was a health hazard forcing residents out. To the south of Chester, the storm destroyed a new convenience store and blew two fuel tanks over 100 yards.
