My area is about to get blasted it appears. Very heavy rains incoming from thunderstorms lined up near the coast. We also had some rain earlier this afternoon.

Edit: I got ~~1.25”

I don't question the extreme nature of today's heat, but I have lost confidence in RDUs measurement integrity.  Similar numbers observed in the area?

ETA: Just saw that RDU recorded 106 today while KFAY was at 101.  I call shenanigans.

ETA2: Just saw this on the NWS facebook page for RDU:

BREAKING: All-time record high/daily record high set at Raleigh & the daily record high set at Fayetteville.
The high at Raleigh was 106 degrees which breaks the all-time record high of 105 degrees and also sets a new daily high record. The high at Fayetteville was 101°F which ties the old record high.
A technician was on-site at the RDU ASOS platform at the time of the record and corroborated the accuracy of the sensor temperature with a handheld calibration device. In addition, the contract weather observer checked the temperature during the afternoon and using two other different devices they noted similar readings at around the time the record was set.

Friday's 106F at RDU does seem a bit much. From what's been posted here sensor location would be a plausible explanation. Here in Greenville (population ~100K) off to your east we too have been in a prolonged dry spell (grass is brown) so we have similar antecedent conditions yet we barely made it to 100F. On Saturday we topped at 99F. Don't know about RDU but Greenville's average July high is 91.4F.

Here’s something NOT different as of 3PM: RDU’s 94 is the warmest in the entire state. What a shocker:

It was 98 yesterday at the Southeast Regional Climate Center in a shady, tree-filled, low-density part of Chapel Hill, but carry on kvetching about the RDU temperatures. Pretty sure the SERCC knows how to reliably measure temperature.

I didn’t bring this up on my own. I earlier saw others (here and elsewhere) mentioning this, including a pro-met. This tweet from Brad Panovich says there’s a warm bias though much more during daytime than night:

https://x.com/wxbrad/status/1809595420802261228?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^tweet

The problem appears to not be with the sensor for that would mean just as much too hot at night, too, along with when it is cloudy, windy, etc. Rather, it appears per Brad to be due to the surroundings:

“This is not an ideal siting situation for KRDU. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's way too much gravel and concrete and a building too close to the ASOS. Compare KRDU versus KCLT ASOS, which is surrounded by vegetation and no buildings”

 From here:

https://x.com/wxbrad/status/1809626846633320508?ref_src=twsrc^tfw|twcamp^tweetembed|twterm^1809626846633320508|twgr^|twcon^s1_&ref_url=

So, it appears Brad has made a case that should perhaps be considered. I don’t think this is intentional (conspiracy). Why would it be? But that doesn’t mean there isn’t an issue to consider that perhaps needs to be resolved.

Being in GA, I would appreciate any objective fact based evidence one way or the other from the RDU area crowd. TIA!

Going back to my comment about runway construction at RDU, here's a sat photo from 06/08. Compared to the Google Maps satellite photo, there is some significant tree/forest removal going on in the area. The station is circled in red:

For what it's worth I recorded 101.9 for a high on 07/05.

Im consistently 2 degrees below what KRDU measures in daylight but very frequently close at nighttime. I’m almost exactly 9 miles from the airport. IMO it has a warm bias it didn’t used to have. Setting the all time record high when most areas were hot but not even close is suspicious. I maxed out at 102.1 that day, well off the 106 they recorded but much more aligned with other observations

I understand your point, the thing is, I suspect that many of us are on here because of an abiding interest in weather statistics, so when we see an anomaly we are interested.  Like many of us here, I have lived in NC all of my life, growing up near Fayetteville.  KFAY had traditionally been warmer than KRDU.  Now though, KRDU regularly outdoes KFAY, especially on hot days.  Last Friday on the day when I made my comments, KRDU beat KFAY by 5 degrees.  So yeah, I admit I am skeptical.

It's actually a fascinating issue because UHI affects traditionally have a larger impact in elevating night temperatures compared to day temps, so why the "RDU bonus" seems larger during the day is surprising.

By the way, I lurk in the Mid-Atlantic forum a lot and they regularly had discussion about how unrepresentative the snow totals are from the DC airports because of microclimate.  This past winter in their discussions someone made the point that the main purpose of airport weather observations is to give the pilots and airport officials weather data pertinent to their operations.  They are NOT motivated by a love of meteorological statistics.

Lastly, the "RDU bonus" is something I can remember being noticed for some time now.  I can remember Greg Fishel making a snide remark about it while he was still at WRAL.  But it does seem to have become more obvious in recent years anecdotally.

Good point. Regarding the bolded I don't know if this is related to a classic UHI effect. The hotter sunny summer afternoons are possibly due to surrounding gravel/concrete/building per Brad P. and/or the construction of a new runway per marsman's posts. Would these be classic UHI? I also wonder if the recent flash drought was affecting RDU more than FAY and other areas since drought, alone, typically results in hotter summer afternoons due to drier ground but not warmer lows.

Regardless of exact daily records or just how hot Rdu is compared to other places, this has got to be a record hot summer. I cannot remember a summer with this many 100 and upper 90 degree days this early in the summer

You know it’s bad when TV Mets are billing relief as temps falling to the low 90s

It is awful but not sure if it will beat 2007. I hope not. There was this tonight though:

Indeed: check out both the E US and the SW US on this map: over 75 locations in US with hottest summer 6/1 through present with probably about that many second hottest:
